Iron Rebellion prepares for the future with foundational updates

Iron Rebellion is future-ready with today’s update, bringing completely overhauled AI units, new modes, and more to the multiplayer VR mech game.

Currently available on Quest and Steam, developer Black Beach Studio describes today’s “Foundations Update” as “a meaningful step toward the next stage of game development.” It introduces Abandoned Sector 9, an official new map originally created by community Discord member Kforce and then improved by the studio’s lead artist.

Black Beach Studio says Abandoned Sector 9 represents the team’s latest visual direction, calling it “the most faithful environment ever created” for Iron Rebellion. The map depicts flooded alleyways, broken overpasses, and broken megastructures in a dense battlefield, and the studio advised that it provides a preview of the future of this universe.

This update also introduces a complete overhaul of the AI system to help expand Iron Rebellion’s PvE direction. “With new behavioral profiles, adaptive threat responses, and moment-to-moment context awareness, AI units now support more responsive, diverse, and engaging encounters across all existing modes and all future collaborative experiences,” the team said.

Two new gameplay modes have been revealed. Death Match is a free-for-all mode with a time limit, while Gun Game lets you progress through your loadout by defeating enemies using a randomly selected mech class.

Finally, Iron Rebellion also underwent a complete network rewrite. The developer says it will separate the backend from the previous team-dependent structure and allow new game types to be introduced in future updates.

“This update brings us one step closer to the kind of experience we want to build,” Black Beach Studio founder Justin Spice said in a prepared statement. “New AI opens up design spaces like never before, and Sector 9 provides a visual representation of where we’re taking the world. There’s a lot more to come, and this update is a critical part of getting there.”

Iron Rebellion is currently available on the Meta Quest platform and Steam.
