Luxury in India has traditionally been associated with ownership. A celebrated painting, an heirloom diamond, a rare watch or an iconic piece of furniture was often seen as the ultimate symbol of success. But as the country’s affluent consumers become more discerning, the conversation is beginning to shift from just buying exceptional objects to understanding the stories behind them.

It is this changing mindset that The Collectors’ Cove, a new platform by Giftex, a premium online auction platform that specialises in curated sales of fine art, jewellery, watches and luxury collectibles, in association with HSBC India, hopes to tap into. Taking place on August 1 and 2 at Mumbai’s Ballard Pier Downtown Experience Centre, the event brings together fine art, jewellery, watches, collectible design and luxury objects under one roof. But rather than positioning itself as another luxury exhibition, its organisers say the aim is to create a space where conversations around collecting become just as important as the objects themselves.

Giftex is part of the AstaGuru ecosystem and leverages nearly four decades of experience in the luxury and gifting business to connect collectors with trusted sellers through a digital bidding platform. It is positioned as a more accessible, collector-focused platform.

“We’ve built The Collectors’ Cove as a curated journey rather than a marketplace,” says Manoj Mansukhani, director, marketing, AstaGuru & Giftex. “We want people to leave having learned something about what they’ve seen, not just browsed exceptional objects.”

That distinction is central to the event’s philosophy. According to Aparna Batra, Chief Business Officer, AstaGuru & Giftex, India’s luxury market has largely evolved around transactions, with exhibitions, previews and showcases primarily focused on selling.

“The traditional Indian luxury landscape is heavily transactional and most events are built around the point of sale,” says Aparna. “There was a notable absence of a format built entirely around the collector’s journey. Today, collectors often navigate a fragmented ecosystem through dealers, auction houses and word of mouth. The Collectors’ Cove is designed to bring those worlds together into a single, thoughtfully curated experience.”

The timing also reflects a broader change in the way India’s wealthy are approaching luxury. Aparna believes that buyers who once sought internationally recognised brands are now asking more nuanced questions about the objects they acquire.

“A decade ago, consumption was largely aspirational and brand-led,” she says. “Today, collectors have moved beyond entry-level luxury and are asking harder, more intellectual questions. Provenance and craftsmanship are becoming core components of the collector’s vocabulary.”

    Observing the market

Manoj has observed a similar shift, particularly among younger buyers, who often spend months researching artists, designers and independent makers before making a purchase.

“Today’s younger collectors don’t buy just for status,” he says. “They research deeply, support emerging artists and makers, and care as much about a piece’s story, sustainability and cultural relevance as its investment value.”

That changing attitude has influenced every aspect of The Collectors’ Cove, from the way the venue has been designed to how the objects are presented. Spread across nearly 80,000 square feet of waterfront space, the event has been conceived by architects Sanjay and Ayesha Puri as an immersive cultural experience where visitors move through spaces designed to encourage curiosity rather than quick transactions. Instead of simply displaying objects, the organisers have paired them with artist biographies, provenance notes and historical context, while also creating opportunities for visitors to engage with specialists through private walkthroughs, advisory sessions, workshops and panel discussions.

One of the more unusual aspects of the event is that it refuses to separate luxury into neat categories. Fine art, jewellery, watches, collectible design and interiors have all been brought together because collectors themselves rarely think in silos

“The rigid categorisation of luxury is an artificial construct,” she says. “Someone with a deep appreciation for modern Indian art is often equally drawn to high horology or antique silver. The common thread isn’t the category, but an eye for rarity, technical rigour and historical narrative.”

The curatorial team followed the same thinking while selecting the exhibits.

“The thread connecting every object isn’t category—it’s craftsmanship, rarity and cultural significance,” says a spokesperson from the team. “Whether it’s fine art, jewellery or design, every piece has to earn its place through its story.”

The line-up reflects that approach. Visitors will encounter international names such as de Gournay and Dubai-based jewellery house SWE ME alongside Indian jewellers including Sunita Shekhawat, Gyan Jaipur, Farah Khan Fine Jewellery and Ravi Kheni. Independent Swiss watchmakers such as Konstantin Chaykin, HYT and L’Epée 1839 will share space with design brands including Jaipur Rugs, Beyond Designs and Arjun Rathi Design, creating a mix that mirrors the increasingly eclectic tastes of modern collectors.

Among the event’s highlights is an immersive tribute to MF Husain, where the artist’s iconic horse paintings have been transformed into animated digital canvases that visitors can walk through. Accompanied by collectible objects inspired by Husain’s visual language, the installation explores how artistic ideas can move beyond paintings into contemporary design, while reinforcing the event’s larger emphasis on storytelling.

The organisers also see the platform as an opportunity to reposition Indian craftsmanship within the global collecting conversation.

“Indian craftsmanship deserves to be presented with the same curatorial rigour and institutional seriousness as European design or Swiss horology,” says the spokesperson. “Bringing these traditions into the same space and holding them to the same standards is a deliberate step towards changing that perception.”

For them, the value of a collectible lies in more than rarity or price.

“A great collectible isn’t just rare or beautifully made. It brings together exceptional craftsmanship, documented history and cultural meaning that goes beyond material value,” says the spokesperson.

Beyond the inaugural edition, Giftex hopes The Collectors’ Cove will grow into something larger than an annual event.

“While the annual event serves as an important anchor, a true ecosystem requires continuity,” says Aparna. “Our vision is for The Collectors’ Cove to evolve into a year-round platform that maintains an ongoing dialogue between collectors, master artisans and discerning brands.”

The Collectors’ Cove will be held on August 1–2, 2026, at Ballard Pier Downtown Experience Centre, Fort, Mumbai; attendance is by registration at thecollectorscove.in.
