Hirokazu Kore-eda has premiered his new film, Look Back, at the Venice Film Festival. This is a live-action adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s manga of the same name, the author of manga such as Chainsaw Man. In a deeply moving way, it shows us the relationship between two young girls who dream of becoming manga artists. Though they’ll run into problems trying to achieve it.

A film that has been very well received

Although the film already screened at the Cannes Film Festival in May to positive reviews, its reception in Venice has been even stronger, receiving a 12-minute ovation. Kore-eda, visibly moved, during the press conference took the opportunity to reflect on how the perception of manga has changed over the years, “when I was a child, we were told that if we read manga we wouldn’t grow up properly. But nowadays, manga is everywhere, now we can read it without anyone criticizing us”.

Although Kore-eda’s version still has to hit theaters and we don’t know when that will happen,Look Back was also previously adapted into an anime by Kiyotaka Oshiyama in an excellent, critically acclaimed adaptation that earned it the award for best film of the year at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards. And it’s also available to watch on Prime Video for anyone who wants to see an excellent adaptation of this moving story while waiting to see what Kore-eda has in store to earn that 12-minute ovation.
