When I say I flew through The Five Star Weekend, I mean I binged the Peacock series at breakneck speed. (And yes, it’ll absolutely land on my list of the best shows of the month.) The true stars of the show are, of course, the five leading ladies: Jennifer Garner, Gemma Chan, Regina Hall, Chloë Sevigny and D’Arcy Carden. But another cast member—who is seriously having a Walton Goggins-sized moment—caught my eye as well: Timothy Olyphant.
Olyphant plays Garner’s former flame and, yada yada yada, smooching is involved. But it wasn’t just the smooching that gave me pause—it was how familiar Olyphant looked to me. And I don’t mean from his more “recent” roles, like in Santa Clarita Diet or Deadwood or Justified. I had the nagging feeling that I knew him from wayyyyy back…and then it hit me.
The hunky heartthrob played a major part in one of my favorite horror franchises of all time. In fact, Olyphant turned out to be one of the killers (don’t start with me about “spoilers;” it’s been 29 years). I’m obviously referring to the 1997 hit sequel, Scream 2.
Olyphant played the part of Mickey, a close friend of Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott during her college years. Also in the film, along with the then-29-year-old Olyphant? Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jada Pinkett Smith, Jamie Kennedy, Liev Schreiber, Heather Graham, Jerry O’Connell, Tori Spelling, Portia de Rossi, Rebecca Gayheart and Laurie Metcalf. Phew. Talk about a who’s who!
One super memorable scene from the slasher film? When he assists his friend (O’Connell) in serenading Sidney in front of her classmates. (See the iconic scene above.)
Then, there’s the grand finale where he’s unmasked as one of the film’s Ghostface killers, along with a very scary Metcalf.
Scream 2 was a massive hit at the box office, bringing in a whopping $172 million. The franchise then continued, with the most recent edition, Scream 7, coming out this year.
Will I be able to look at Olyphant the same now that I’ve made this throwback connection? I sure will. Honestly, I’m even more impressed with him now.
