Here’s How Much A PlayStation Plus Subscription Cost In 2016 Vs. 2026

Sony’s PlayStation Plus service changed massively in the ten years between when it was a simple and unified service back in 2016, and the multi-function ecosystem it is in 2026. Back in 2016, it covered online multiplayer, cloud saves, and monthly free games across PS4, PS3, and PS Vita. That year was also the time Sony announced its first major price hike, rising to $60 per year from $50 per year, with a three-month membership to increasing to $25 from $18. The company’s lowest-tier monthly option stayed at $10. In 2026, there are three plan types ranging from the 2016-equivalent features, now called the “Essential” plan at $80 per year. Sony also offers two other plans that including a its “Extra” plan with a back catalog of popular recent games for $135 per year, and “Premium” plan with game trials, cloud streaming, and movies.

The common thread for all the plans, even stretching back to 2016, is that Sony’s offered a handful of monthly downloadable titles alongside other benefits like cloud storage for game saves and the multiplayer functionality in games. The multiplayer access and rotating games got a lot of attention, with discounts and other features often overlooked. I was guilty of it back in the day, as I am today with the PlayStation Plus perks I’m probably not using.

But these pricing changes over that decade weren’t as simple as just paying those rates, because elevated inflation spread around the world for half that time. Adjusting for inflation, $60 back in 2016 had the purchasing power of nearly $85 a decade later, meaning the 12-month option has stayed roughly the same, landing at $80 for PlayStation Plus Essential in 2026.

So what are the different prices for PS Plus across Sony’s expanded three-tier membership system these days? Well, it now splits the service into Essential, Extra, and Premium tiers, offering different features ranging from core online multiplayer to cloud streaming and massive game catalogs.

The entry level tier, PS Plus Essential, costs $11 for one month, $28 for 3 months, or $80 for a 12-month membership. This tier covers core multiplayer, cloud storage, “exclusive” discounts, and a rotating collection of monthly games. The middle and high-tier plans add massive fixed game catalogs, much like its chief rival from Microsoft–of course, Xbox Game Pass had its own pricing changes in the decade up to 2026.

Back to Sony, PS+ Extra costs $17 monthly, or $135 annually to add the PS4 and PS5 catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics. PS+ Premium climbs to $20 per month or $160 each year and includes PS5 cloud streaming, time-limited game trials, and a catalog of older “classic” games. The main choice here comes down to ownership and which tier is worth it for them. Gamers must decide whether they prefer the basic benefits of Essential and buying their own games, or paying for a higher subscription tier with a rotating game library. Of course this is a touchy subject at the moment with PlayStation 5 going all digital next year, not to mention a lawsuit in California over the “buy now” button on PlayStation Store misleading consumers into thinking they own their digital games (Sony argues they don’t).

Inflation-adjusted value comparison: Are players getting more or less?

Buying a 12-month PlayStation Plus membership back in 2016 saved gamers nearly 50% when compared to the $10 monthly subscription, which would total to $120 over 12 months. That arguably made the 12-month subscription a no-brainer. Additionally, that price was roughly the same as the sticker on a new-release game for the PlayStation 4 at the time.

As years rolled by and the PlayStation 5 released, Sony reduced savings on annual subscriptions, making the gap between monthly and yearly subscriptions smaller and smaller. How much is a PlayStation Plus subscription in 2026? While 2016 gamers saved up to half off monthly rates, modern entry-level members only receive a 33% discount with annual fees rising from $60 to $80. Even with inflation evening the playing field somewhat, rising price tags are a tough pill to swallow.

There is still savings to be had today nonetheless, as paying $80 annually for Essential saves about $52 compared to paying $11 monthly, which works out to about $132 a year. Similar comparisons with PS+ Extra at $135 vs. $204, and Premium $160 vs. $240, both have a 33% discount, or $68 to $80 in yearly savings. It’s still worth it for players to go for an annual subscription vs. monthly, but it all depends on which subscription is going to be the most useful for them.
