Gunman Contracts – Stand Alone has a launch date now, and the date is not the interesting part. The interesting part is whose it is.

When I wrote about this game on August 18, its release plan was borrowed from somebody else. The paid standalone from the solo developer behind the Half-Life: Alyx mods was going to go on sale the same day Valve shipped the Steam Frame, a date Valve had not named, which meant the game did not really have a date either. I called that a remarkable thing to build a launch around. Apparently he came round to the same view.

    He picked a day

The listing reads Sep 10, 2026, developer ANB_Seth, publisher 2080 Games. Underneath the wishlist box Steam does its own flat arithmetic on it: “This game plans to unlock in approximately 9 days.”

UploadVR reports that the developer posted a short note on Reddit alongside the date. “While the initial plan was to launch the same day as Steam Frame, we ultimately decided to choose our own launch timing,” it reads, before adding that he still has “full trust that Steam Frame will be coming this Summer, as this is Valve’s last standing statement,” and that he chose a date close enough to keep the two near each other if that holds.

That is a careful little paragraph and I have read it about six times. He is not renouncing the association, and he is not throwing anything at Valve. He simply stopped organising his year around a calendar he does not control.

Good. It was never a reasonable position for him to be in.

    What nine days actually buys

Three connected story contracts, which is the number he has been saying since the announcement: a safehouse on the city outskirts, a syndicate run harbor warehouse district, and a mob restaurant with something unpleasant under it. Three more are promised as free updates. There are five challenge maps split across two modes, one of which drops up to thirty enemies in an enclosed space and asks you to clear it. Eighteen weapons to unlock, each with its own attachments. A compound bow. Knives. An optional low violence mode and a set of unlockable cheats, both of which are strange, welcome, thoroughly unfashionable things to ship in 2026.

The Early Access section of the store page is unusually plain about what is finished. “Three story contracts, two challenge modes, weapons and attachment system, leaderboards, and the Home Base are all finished and in your hands on day one,” it says. “VR and Non-VR (PC + Steam Deck) are both fully supported.”

Steam Deck. That is the line I keep going back to, because it quietly widens who this thing is for. A hybrid shooter that runs flat on a handheld is not a VR game with a fallback mode bolted on. It is a game with two front doors, and the VR door is the one the developer spent four years learning to build.

The system requirements say the same thing in numbers. Flat mode asks for an i5-7500 and a GTX 1070 with 12 GB of memory. VR wants an i7-12700 and an RTX 3060 with 16 GB, over OpenXR, standing or seated. Twenty gigabytes of storage either way. Those are not identical machines, and the gap between them is the whole reason the flat build exists.
