GTA 6’s Advanced Weather System Officially Confirmed By Rockstar

“Grand Theft Auto” fans are all too aware that it’s been a full 13 years since Rockstar Games launched “GTA 5.” Now, following multiple delays and what has surely been the most agonizing wait in gaming history, “Grand Theft Auto 6” is almost upon us. Thankfully, everything we’ve seen thus far suggests it will be more than worth the wait. Rockstar have put a frankly unfathomable level of detail into this game, which aside from finally providing the classic “GTA” mayhem we’ve all been craving, will allow players to enjoy side activities as thrilling as cave diving and as oddly specific as petting dogs. What’s more, Rockstar has now confirmed via a new piece from Game Informer that the “GTA 6” map is twice as large as “GTA 5” and will feature dynamic weather events unlike anything the series has seen thus far.

Most significantly, it’s been revealed that as Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos build their Vice City criminal empire, they’ll have to periodically contend with hurricanes and tropical storms. These major weather events are a new addition, and will involve “heavy clouds, strong winds, dense atmospherics, and a lot of rain,” according to Owen Shepherd, vice president of art for lighting and rendering at Rockstar. Shepherd stopped short of confirming when and how these storms will occur (it could be that they’re limited to specific missions). But he did provide some insight into how storms will change the environment. “Everything is dripping wet,” he said. “Water is gushing off roof edges and lampposts, thunder rumbles, and flashes of lightning light up the clouds dramatically.”

Though neither Shepherd nor Rockstar provided further details, the addition of storms is exciting, and it could have a significant impact on gameplay, especially given the promise of a “persistent” system that will alter the environment.

Rockstar has designed the GTA 6 weather system to enhance scale and realism

Rockstar has confirmed dozens of side activities for “GTA 6,” but it hasn’t yet provided in-depth details on how hurricanes and tropical storms will impact players’ experience. The company did, however, confirm it had completely redesigned the weather system, which isn’t all that shocking a revelation considering how long it’s taken for this game to arrive.

Owen Shepherd explained to Game Informer how he and his team designed the weather to enhance the sense of scale in “GTA 6.” He explained:

“We have re-engineered our weather system to make everything much more localized and persistent. And really wanted the world to feel dynamically solid and achieve a sense of scale we haven’t felt before.” He went on to highlight the “fully dynamic cloudscapes” that “roll across the map” and create conditions that closely mimic “afternoons in the Floridian summer and autumn.”

There will also be dynamic wind effects, which could theoretically make for some interesting mission dynamics, should players be tasked with carrying out a specific task in a wind storm. At the very least, the new weather system should enhance player immersion, with more localized conditions allowing for drastically different weather in separate areas of the map. If you happen to be in a sunny area , for instance, you’ll supposedly be able to spot storms in the distance, adding to the sense of realism. Rockstar claims that when players visit an area after a downpour, they’ll experience the results of the weather, including puddles, wet surfaces, and even rainbows, which are said to appear in the right conditions. It’s this aspect that’s particularly intriguing as it could mean the weather system has more of an impact than simply enhancing the realism of Leonida.

Hurricanes and tropical storms could have a major effect on GTA 6 gameplay

While Rockstar is yet to reveal more about how the weather system in “GTA 6” affects players, the “persistent” element of it all could be more significant than it seems. If a rain storm leaves puddles behind, does a hurricane or tropical storm have more major consequences such as flooding and property damage? If so, that could potentially bring an entirely new gameplay experience to the franchise. If the storms aren’t limited to certain missions, are players given the choice to venture out in these adverse conditions? Are there new gameplay mechanics that activate during tropical storms, whereby players have to board up their safe houses, protect their property, or even use the cover of storms to knock over a few local businesses?

We already know how in-depth the new wanted system is in “GTA 6,” and we’ve learned that simply changing your clothes isn’t enough to lose the cops. Similarly, choosing to rob a store without shooting the owner or committing a crime without being caught by CCTV will result in a less severe response from the authorities. Surely, then, this new dynamic and persistent weather system can affect how players are able to behave in the in-game world. At the very least, given how detailed “GTA 6” is in general, it wouldn’t be surprising if Rockstar has made it so these new weather conditions affect the gameplay in some sort of meaningful way. For now, we’ll have to wait until November 19, 2026 when “GTA 6” officially arrives.
