Now that the “Grand Theft Auto 6” hype cycle has entered its home stretch and we got that juicy extended look at the game in August, excitement for the most anticipated game of all time is at a fever pitch. Along with that, there has finally been a flood of official, concrete information about “GTA 6” to parse out after years of Rockstar drip-feeding us news on the game. We went from knowing almost nothing about “GTA 6” to having a mountain of stuff to keep track of seemingly overnight.

This guide covers all the pertinent info about the launch of “GTA 6,” including the whens, wheres, and hows of getting the game bought, installed, and ready to play as well as the most crucial bits of peripheral info pertaining to the game’s launch.

GTA 6 will be released on November 19, 2026
The first official “GTA 6” trailer carried a vague 2025 release window, which would prove to be overly optimistic on Rockstar’s part. The second trailer brought an actual date — May 26, 2026 — which would also subsequently be pushed out. Finally, Rockstar landed on November 19, 2026 as the true release date for “GTA 6,” and it seems extremely unlikely that will change. Once Rockstar put that date out there, most other game companies cleared out of November entirely — except, of course, for Nintendo, who has since announced that its remake of “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” will also come out in November.
It might seem like a foregone conclusion that an event game like “GTA 6” would release near the end of the year, and that has certainly been the case for most “GTA” games. However, “Grand Theft Auto 4” was released on April 29, 2008. Which may seem odd, until you remember that it was delayed from its originally planned release, which was to be the previous October. Conversely, “GTA 5” originally had a spring 2013 release date that was then moved to that September. So lately, every time Rockstar tries to launch a “GTA” in the spring, it becomes a fall release, and vice versa.
Pre-loading of GTA 6 will begin on November 12, 2026
We still don’t know just how big the file size for that “GTA 6” download will be, but it’ll undoubtedly be massive. More conservative estimates are currently putting in the 150GB ballpark that is typical of recent major AAA games, while some have claimed the “GTA 6” file size could actually be closer to 700GB. Take it all with a grain of salt until Rockstar confirms it, but 200-300GB seems to be as high as most reasonable speculation puts it. We highly doubt that even Rockstar would try to get away with a 700GB game knowing how many configurations of PlayStation and Xbox don’t even have that big of a hard drive out of the box.
Either way, you won’t have to worry about downloading all of “GTA 6” on launch day. Rockstar has announced that pre-loading of the game will officially begin on November 12, 2026. This includes both digital pre-orders, as well as those who buy the disc-less “physical” edition, the latter of which will be available prior to the launch date specifically so those people can also begin the pre-loading process. As for whether that will guarantee that “GTA 6” will be fully playable on launch day without any required additional day one patches, that will probably be unknowable until November 19 is actually here.
GTA 6 will cost either $79.99 or $99.99 depending on the version
Speculation ran rampant as to what “GTA 6” was going to cost, with most people agreeing that it would at least match the $79.99 price point that had already been infamously breached by “Mario Kart World” and the Switch 2 version of “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.” Some even said “GTA 6” could be the first hundred-dollar game. As it turns out, both sides were kind of right.
“GTA 6” will either cost you $79.99 or $99.99 depending on which edition you buy. We’ll explain what those editions actually are below, but what’s important is that you will need to spend at least 80 bucks in order to enjoy even the most basic version of “GTA 6” come November 19. For what it’s worth, you can obviously rest assured that those 80 bucks will grant you many hours — if not multiple years — of entertainment. After all, people are still actively playing “GTA 5” 13 years on, so expect that same longevity out of “GTA 6.”
There are three GTA 6 editions: physical with code, standard digital, and Ultimate Edition
Now, about those different versions of “GTA 6.” We now know that, for each of the platforms “GTA 6” has been announced for, there will be three editions to choose from. As with most games, there is both a physical and a digital version that are the same price. In fact, that is even more true with “GTA 6” than it is for most games, as the physical game is just a case with a code in it — making it a glorified digital version anyway. Both that one and the regular digital version will cost $79.99.
Then there is the $99.99 “Ultimate Edition” that includes everything the base game has plus a whole bunch of added content — though it is all in-game content, which is sad when you compare it to the collector’s edition of “GTA 5” and its mix of in-game perks and real-life merch. It should be noted that those who buy the $79.99 versions of “GTA 6” can pay the $20 difference to upgrade to the Ultimate Edition at any time, though the pre-order bonuses are just that, and will no longer be available after launch day.
GTA 6 is only currently announced for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series
While the PC crowd was hoping that Rockstar would break with tradition and announce a PC version or “GTA 6” alongside the console versions, that didn’t prove to be the case. As it stands, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series are the only platforms that have been officially confirmed for “GTA 6,” certainly in terms of what is coming out on November 19 and for the immediate future.
A PC port will definitely happen eventually, and a lot of Nintendo fans are crossing their fingers for a Switch 2 version — unlikely, perhaps, but never say never — but either way, you will need a PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, Xbox Series S, or Xbox Series X if you want to play “GTA 6” at launch or for at least a little while after. As for whether PC players should buy one of those consoles or wait for the inevitable PC port, we suspect more than a few of them are currently contemplating that very quandary.
No multiplayer modes are currently announced for GTA 6
“GTA Online” has become undeniably popular. So popular, in fact, that Rockstar hadn’t been in a huge rush to make “GTA 6,” given the cash it was raking in with “GTA Online.” It’s all but assured that a new version of “GTA Online” will eventually launch that uses “GTA 6” as its foundation, but don’t expect to be hopping online at launch. In fact, don’t expect to be playing any sort of multiplayer at all. Rockstar has explicitly stated that it has been focusing entirely on the single-player experience of “GTA 6,” and that’s all that players should expect when the game launches.
If we had to guess, we’d say the company is going to give “GTA 6,” its story, and its characters at least a few months to have the spotlight all to themselves before it takes any of that attention away by announcing the new “GTA Online” and/or “GTA 6”-related content for the current version. Again, it is most certainly coming, but probably not until players have completed the story of “GTA 6” and explored every nook and cranny of Vice City and surrounding Leonida.
Rockstar has promised no microtransactions or monetization of any kind for GTA 6 at launch
So we already know that you won’t be able to hop online for multiplayer at all with “GTA 6” when it first launches. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that Rockstar wouldn’t still have had some sort of online store set up that would be offering in-game items and perks for sale for real cash at launch. Fortunately, the company has already confirmed that to not be the case. Other than whatever extras come with pre-ordering the game or upgrading to the Ultimate Edition, there won’t be anything trying to get you to spend real money within the world of “GTA 6,” at least not at launch.
Now, microtransactions and purchasable bonus content aren’t always of the predatory type. The latter also includes full-fledged DLC, which players tend to embrace. But the “no microtransactions/no monetization at launch” creed for “GTA 6” also means no DLC at launch, either. “GTA 5” famously lacked any sort of offline, single-player DLC after “GTA 4” had those two huge expansions — “The Lost and Damned” and “The Ballad of Gay Tony” — with it all going to “GTA Online” instead. We would love to see offline DLC for “GTA 6” down the road that doesn’t involve “GTA Online,” but nothing of the sort has been announced, so don’t look for it at launch or anytime especially soon after.
Two limited-edition GTA 6 DualSense controllers for PS5 will launch alongside the game
What is a massive video game launch event without merch to go along with it? Rockstar might have cheaped out with the Ultimate Edition of “GTA 6” by not including any physical merch of any kind, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t going to be official “GTA 6” merch available for purchase at all. In fact, there are already “GTA 6”-branded controllers set to be available when the game launches for those that want “GTA 6” to quite literally be in their hands.
Two limited edition DualSense controllers will launch alongside “GTA 6,” each carrying an $85 price tag. Both have touch pads with a “VI” in the font of the game’s title, palm trees along the grips, and shiny purple accenting on the bottom. The primary difference between the two is the main color, with one being black and the other white. They are available exclusively through the PlayStation online store, though we can’t promise that pre-orders won’t already be sold out by the time you read this. As of yet, there haven’t been any announced plans for any “GTA 6” controllers for Xbox.
