GTA 6 gets the PS5 spotlight: Xbox performance is still unconfirmed

Before its November 19 launch, Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 6 has turned into one of the PlayStation 5’s biggest marquee releases. Sony is promoting it hard, with branded accessories and a steady stream of marketing, and the hype is obvious online too, where reports say some fans are planning to take time off work and PlayStation 5 Pro restocks are selling out fast.

Sony is tying Grand Theft Auto 6 closely to PlayStation 5 through PlayStation Blog posts, State of Play promotion, and new DualSense support that includes haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, controller speaker effects, Tempest 3D AudioTech, and fast SSD loading, at least according to Sony. What Rockstar Games hasn’t confirmed is whether Grand Theft Auto 6 will actually run better on PlayStation 5 than it does on Xbox Series X|S, whether that means frame rates, image quality, or overall performance.

Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson has said Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently targeting 30 FPS on consoles at launch, with its huge world, visual fidelity, dense crowds, and complex physics pushing current hardware hard enough that 60 FPS is still a big ask. There’s also still no official platform-by-platform breakdown covering resolution, loading times, graphics modes, or the trade-offs on Xbox Series S, and Rockstar Games still hasn’t announced a 60 FPS mode for PlayStation 5 Pro, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S.

If you’re picking a console for Grand Theft Auto 6, you’re probably better off waiting for Rockstar Games’ final specs than relying on Sony’s marketing push. Grand Theft Auto 6 arrives on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, alongside black and white limited-edition DualSense controllers priced at $84.99.
