Ghamasaan movie review: Arshad Warsi, Pratik Gandhi shine but predictability hurt the impact

    11 September,2026 03:06 PM IST |  Mumbai  |  Shruti Sampat

Ghamasaan, directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia, pits Arshad Warsi’s feared dacoit against Pratik Gandhi’s determined cop. Strong performances and an authentic Bundelkhand setting elevate the crime drama, but predictable turns and a stretched second half dilute its overall impact

Tigmanshu Dhulia returns to the Hindi heartland with Ghamasaan, a gritty crime drama that brings together Arshad Warsi and Pratik Gandhi in a tense cat-and-mouse game. Set in the ravines of Bundelkhand, the film has all the ingredients of a compelling Dhulia outing raw characters, earthy landscapes, violence and a murky power structure. Yet, despite a strong atmosphere and committed performances, the story occasionally struggles to rise above familiar territory.

The film follows Maharaj (Arshad Warsi), a dreaded dacoit who has established his own reign across the region. On the other side is IPS officer Aditya Singh (Pratik Gandhi), who takes on the task of bringing him down. Their conflict forms the backbone of the narrative, with the film exploring the uneasy relationship between crime, politics and law enforcement.

The biggest strength of Ghamasaan is undoubtedly its casting. Warsi, better known for his comic timing, slips convincingly into the skin of a ruthless outlaw. His restrained performance, intimidating body language and menacing presence make Maharaj an unsettling figure. He does not need to constantly shout or brandish a weapon to establish authority.

Gandhi, meanwhile, brings quiet intensity to Aditya. Rather than turning the cop into an invincible action hero, the actor plays him as a determined officer who relies more on strategy and instinct. Their contrasting approaches give the central conflict some weight.

Dhulia also gets the setting right. The dusty villages, rugged terrain and local dialect give the film an authentic texture, making its world feel lived-in rather than manufactured. The violence is often brutal, reinforcing the harshness of the environment.

However, the screenplay begins to lose some of its grip as the story progresses. Several developments feel predictable, while some supporting characters and subplots are introduced without receiving enough room to make a lasting impact. The second half, in particular, lacks the urgency established early on, and the narrative starts feeling stretched.

At over two hours, Ghamasaan could have benefited from tighter editing and a sharper screenplay. The ingredients are strong, and the performances keep the film watchable, but the storytelling does not always match the intensity of its setting.

Ghamasaan works best when it stays rooted in its characters and landscape. It may not be Tigmanshu Dhulia’s most accomplished work, but Warsi and Gandhi make this familiar battle between a cop and a dacoit worth watching.
