Kan. (KCTV) – A massive, 335-acre <a href="https://comicvibe.com/seven-seas-entertainment-announces-18-new-titles-at-anime-nyc-2026/” title=”Seven Seas Entertainment Announces 18 New Titles at Anime NYC 2026″>entertainment, arts, and education district that promises to reshape southwest Johnson County is one step closer to reality, but some neighbors expressed concern local infrastructure isn’t ready for the spotlight

The Gardner Planning Commission voted Monday night, August 24, to recommend approval of the mixed-use proposal with reviews and approvals by:

    • The Johnson County Airport Commission
    • The Johnson County Board of Commissioners

Designed by Kansas City-based architecture firm Populous, the multi-million dollar development aims to combine live entertainment, hospitality, and public recreation. According to Velocity Arts, the current master plan features:

    • A 15,000-seat indoor concert pavilion
    • A performing arts center and an esports arena
    • A media-focused college for hands-on entertainment and digital production training
    • Convention and meeting facilities, alongside retail and restaurant space
    • An interconnected network of public parks, waterfront amenities, and gathering spaces

“We’re not simply building another entertainment venue,” Velocity Arts Chief Executive Officer Josh Shibler said. “We’re creating a district where people can attend a concert, take a class, spend a weekend, meet with colleagues, discover local businesses and return for a completely different experience.”

Gardner Mayor Todd Winters expressed strong interest in the project, noting the city is “excited about the opportunity” and appreciates the potential economic boost to the community.

Gardner’s 335-acre entertainment district proposal sparks traffic, communication concerns

However, the scale of the district has raised red flags for some nearby residents expressing concern over traffic, services and whether city and county officials are adequately coordinating.

The proposal is scheduled to face a final vote before the Gardner City Council on Sept. 21.
