Cosplayers in elaborate costumes wandered past gaming tournaments and artist booths at The Shops at Palm Desert this weekend, as GameACon took over the mall for its second straight year of celebrating gaming, creativity and pop culture. The two-day event ran Saturday and Sunday, drawing fans of gaming, cosplay and pop culture who came to compete, shop and show off their costumes.

GameACon is short for Game Arts Conference, and the weekend brought together fans and vendors for video games, gaming tournaments, cosplay contests and live performances. The convention offers a platform for game developers, artists and fans, as KESQ has reported, and it was founded more than a decade ago on the East Coast to highlight game development and digital artistry

Ben Fox, CEO of GameACon, has said the event was created to provide a dedicated space for game development and to grow indie games in the Coachella Valley, per the same station’s report. The Palm Desert edition has featured tournaments, retro gaming, cosplay competitions and a marketplace with handmade items, and the event has remained open to the public.

Shopping, Panels and a Packed Schedule

Visitors browsing the free marketplace could shop for anime merchandise, comics, toys, collectibles, artwork and other merchandise from artists Official scheduling posted on GameACon’s website shows doors opened at 11 a.m. each day, with the free vendor marketplace and gaming experiences beginning right away

The schedule also built in time for fans to connect directly with the people behind their favorite characters and costumes. A voice actor Q&A ran from 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m., followed by a cosplay panel on costumes, characters and creativity from 2:30 p.m. to 3 p.m

Cosplay Contest Rules and Safety Guidelines

The GameACon Cosplay Contest, open to everyone and requiring no separate Gaming or Experience Pass, ran alongside the main event at The Shops at Palm Desert both days, per GameACon’s contest page. Contestants were instructed to check in by 3 p.m. each day to participate.

Costume and prop rules barred smoke, fire, liquids, pyrotechnics, hazardous materials, real weapons, realistic-looking firearms, sharp-edged props and projectile weapons, according to the same GameACon listing. Mall security held final authority over what counted as safe and permitted under those guidelines.

    Building Toward a Regional Fixture

GameACon’s organizers have said they hope the convention becomes a recurring fixture on the Coachella Valley’s event calendar alongside Coachella and Stagecoach, KESQ reported, with plans already underway for next year’s convention and promises of more events, competitions and creative showcases. The event’s developer and creator materials also promoted a physical and digital hybrid showcase, offering a 10-by-10-foot footprint at GameACon 2026 plus full digital integration for participants, who could include indie video game and tabletop developers, visual artists, and audio, performance and narrative professionals.

Those materials noted that electricity was not guaranteed or included for showcase participants unless specifically arranged, and that sales made through the showcase were final; GameACon did not guarantee attendance, sales, revenue, specific floor placement, downloads, wishlists, leads, contacts or digital traffic for anyone signing up.

For a sense of scale elsewhere in Southern California, the SoCal Gaming Expo has run annually since 2015 and occupies an 80,000-square-foot space at the Pasadena Convention Center, featuring more than 200 vendors alongside gaming tournaments, arcade machines, cosplay, anime, panels, skateboarding and music. GameACon’s Palm Desert footprint is considerably smaller, but organizers appear to be betting that a dedicated local platform for game developers, artists and fans can carve out its own lasting place in the desert.
