July 28 — Three Singaporean teenagers, aged 14 to 19, have been detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) after they were self-radicalised by violent extremist ideologies and plotted separate attacks within the city-state

The Internal Security Department (ISD) revealed on July 27 that the cases, while unrelated, highlight a disturbing trend of youth radicalisation.

The detainees were at varying stages of preparation, with some having already identified easily accessible weapons, such as knives, and researching explosive materials online, The Straits Timesreported.

The most alarming case involves a 14-year-old Secondary 2 student arrested in May, just a month before he intended to launch a mass stabbing at his school.

The youth’s path to radicalisation began at age 12 through the gaming platform Roblox, where he encountered first-person shooter games that recreated real-life massacres, including the 1999 Columbine High School shooting.

Feeling marginalised and claiming to be a victim of bullying, the boy began consuming “gore” and mass shooting content, pushed to him by social media algorithms and true-crime communities.

His descent deepened when he discovered the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting in Florida. He began idolising the perpetrator, Omar Mateen, relating to his experience of being bullied and admiring his “kill count.”

Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security K. Shanmugam emphasised the razor-thin margin for error in these cases.

“ISD and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) have got to get it right every single time. The would-be attacker needs to get it right only once,” he told reporters.

A second detainee, 19-year-old tertiary student Tan Jun Jie, targeted Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) personnel at Sembawang Air Base and LGBTQ students at his institution. A Muslim convert who began practising in 2022, Tan was exposed to fundamentalist teachingsheart. He also attempted to launch distributed denial-of-service (DdoS) cyberattacks against Muslim organisations he deemed “de

The third youth, a 15-year-old Secondary 4 student, aspired to establish an Islamic caliphate in Southeast Asia. He researched the construction of pressure-cooker bombs, envisioning an attack in a crowded urban setting to maximise civilian casualties.

The ISD noted a worrying pattern: in all three cases, the youths had shared their extremist views with peers or family, yet often went unreported. In the 15-year-old’s case, friends and family were aware of his views but remained silent.

This trend is part of a larger shift. According to the ISD, more than half of the 23 youths dealt with under the ISA over the last decade intended to carry out attacks within Singapore, with the age of radicalisation trending younger.

In response to these threats, the MHA has issued disabling and access-blocking directions to internet service providers to scrub terrorism-related content from the Singaporean web. These orders target videos and sites that glorify mass shooters and advocate for ISIS.

While Shanmugam acknowledged that it is impossible to block every piece of content in the digital age, Education Minister Desmond Lee stressed that the frontline of defence remains prevention and education.

“Ultimately, we need everybody to play their part in order to keep our school environment safe, and indeed, to keep Singapore safe,” Lee said.
