Welcome to showbiz, Mary Jane Watson! We hope you survive the experience.
FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD MARY JANE WATSON #1 by Ashley Allen and Phil Noto turns a new page for the New York City icon. Following her super hero stint as Venom, Mary Jane Watson returns to the spotlight and opens up her very own production company, Watson Productions! But in show business, things are never truly as they seem, at least not if the Chameleon has anything to say about it.
Series scribe Ashley Allen sits down with Marvel.com to reveal what’s in store for the actress-turned-producer as she sets her sights on filmmaking!
Check out theFRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD MARY JANE #1 preview below!
MARVEL.COM: Between being an actress and a super hero, Mary Jane Watson has done it all. Where do we meet her in FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD MARY JANE?
ASHLEY ALLEN:MJ is at a bit of a crossroads. She’s trying to figure out what her next chapter looks like, especially after her breakup with Venom. Despite taking a step away from superheroing, she now has time to focus on what she really loves: storytelling! She’s developing a creative production studio, but with MJ’s luck, it might not be as clear-cut as it seems.
MARVEL.COM: What kinds of threats and challenges will MJ face in this post-Venom world?
ASHLEY ALLEN:The dangers of show business! Flaky actors. Hard-to-pin-down producers. Impossible timelines. And let’s not even get started about securing funding. But NYC has some bigger threats than others… and unfortunately, let’s just say the Chameleon has plans of his own.
MARVEL.COM: Mary Jane Watson is a well-liked, popular character even within the Marvel Universe. Who might she pull into her orbit in FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD MARY JANE?
ASHLEY ALLEN:NYC is a busy place, and Mary Jane is a busy woman! One of my favorite parts of MJ is her ability to connect. She’ll cross paths with Black Cat and Iron Man, but also with her friends helping out on her production! And, of course, there may be a few lingering souvenirs from Venom.
MARVEL.COM: How has your writing approach on FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD MARY JANE differed from another upcoming book of yours, X-ORCISTS?
ASHLEY ALLEN:I consider myself a very character-driven writer, and that approach is at the heart of both books. But the key difference is in the worlds they inhabit. X-ORCISTS leans into the supernatural while FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD MARY JANE is much more street-level. However, even when threats start to spiral in MARY JANE, my focus is much more on MJ’s personal relationships and ambitions as well as her day-to-day struggles. I’m excited for fans (both new and old) to really see MJ shine!
MARVEL.COM: Tell us more about working with Phil Noto on this book. What was your collaborative process like?
ASHLEY ALLEN: I love working with Phil! He’s an amazing storyteller who brings so much emotion to every page. Seeing him bring Mary Jane to life has been a real treat, and he showcases the tension MJ is facing in both her personal and work life in such an authentic way. I’m very excited for readers to see what he’s done with this book!
