Despite being one of the most iconic casts of characters ever made, Mario and Co. never stray too far from the Mushroom Kingdom.

Nintendo, notorious for protecting its IP and confining its characters to its ownership boxes, repeatedly rebuffs the chance to give Mariothe chance to explore other games, with his attention solely fixated on saving Princess Peach.

Unfortunately for ‘gaming legends’ fans, this left Mario as the glaring omission in Fortnite’sOverride season, which boasts animated icons like Sonic and Crash Bandicoot.

But while these titans of the industry collide in a wild mashup, the medley of Mario menaces are also getting a go at each other in a battle royale setting courtesy of a new, free browser (not Bowser) game.

Smash Royale is a fan-made Mario battle royale that is taking over the internet

Using the hugely expanded cast of Super Smash Bros. community figure Rishi has now created a 45-player battle royale built into the browser search engines that allows you to get the full early-build Fortnite experience with Mario, Koopa, and more.

Super Smash Royale is currently a fully playable game with an overwhelmingly increasing number of players jumping in to be the last Mario standing.

The battle royale isn’t your conventional Mario experience, and nothing akin to Smash Bros. aside from the cast.

Instead of hand-to-hand combat, the cast will trade blows with assault rifles and grenades like Fortnite.

While the aesthetic could probably do with an upgrade, as the map continues to load around the player, there’s much to be praised about this project that offers a battle roayle experience like no other.

It’s not the only Mario browser game to be released this month either, as the iconic Super Mario 64 title was rebuilt in the free-to-play format, keeping that old-school brilliance and vintage vibes.

Whether these games will be around for long is yet to be seen.

The Nintendo lawyers are usually hot on the case for any unlicensed projects like this.

Although there’s a high chance that it could fly under the radar, Nintendo’s legal team is likely infuriated by the White House this week, following propaganda posts on social media made using The Legend of Zelda logos and aesthetic.

Hopefully, Smash Royale can avoid any immediate retribution and be a fun community game for the foreseeable future.
