Fortnite is currently amid its annual Fortnitemares season and as such, several iconic horror characters from films and games have received skins.
Freddy Krueger from Nightmare on Elm Street, Slenderman, and the animatronics from the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise are amongst the line-up, though the latest addition has completely divided the fanbase.
Nikki Freeman from the 2026 hit film Obsession has now received her own skin, though many believe it’s a step too far, even for Epic Games.
The skin has two variants. The first is Nikki’s default appearance and the second is Nikki with fake blood on her face. An emote is also included that recreates the now iconic “no, no, no” scene from the film.
Plenty of fans are excited to see her come to the game, but a loud majority are calling for a boycott due to the nature of Nikki’s character. Spoilers ahead for Obsession.
Obsession is about a guy called Bear who’s in-love with his lifelong friend Nikki. Rather than simply confess his feelings, he turns to a mysterious item called a One Wish Willow.
Bear wishes for Nikki to love him more than anyone else in the world, and to Bear’s surprise, it actually works. The remainder of the film explores the pair’s new, unnatural relationship, and the physical/psychological toll it takes upon Nikki’s body.
Essentially, the film delves deeply into themes of assault and manipulation, with Nikki being a victim of Bear’s selfish wants and needs. It’s because of this that Nikki’s inclusion in Fortnite has received backlash.
Social media platform X is currently full of posts arguing both why Nikki should and shouldn’t be a skin in the game. Some believe it’s downright wrong, whereas others want Nikki to be more than just a victim.
The Obsession skin isn’t even Fortnite’s lowest point
After tuning into the discourse, I’m understanding of both sides of the argument. However, as others have pointed out, Nikki isn’t the only ‘victim’ who’s received a skin in Fortnite.
The Five Nights at Freddy’s animatronics are possessed by the spirits of murdered children and stood alongside them in the new Fortnitemares cover art is Freddy Krueger, a child murderer.
Fortnite isn’t afraid to throw out a controversial skin every now and then, which is why I’m more confused by Nikki’s alternative look.
Like I said before, one of the variants is supposed to be Nikki with blood pouring down her face, but the skin has turned the blood black so it doesn’t resemble the bodily fluid all that accurately. It’s a weird change considering her story. There are clearly lines that Fortnite won’t cross; it’s obviously just very picky about which ones.
Ultimately, Fortnite’s new Obsession skin isn’t a problem in a vacuum. There’s an entire collection of skins that probably shouldn’t be in a game aimed at a younger demographic.
The way forward is simple; vote with your wallets and don’t buy the skins if you don’t like the content.
