The Lanterns panel at San Diego Comic Con revealed a slew of exciting announcements about HBO’s take on the DC hero. Here’s everything we learned.

The cast of HBO’s Lanterns sat down for an in-depth chat about what viewers can expect from the show, and if there’s one thing they made clear, it’s that nearly all of them are huge fans of the DC comic. They’re extremely dedicated to doing right by the fans, and if there’s anything this panel has shown us, it’s that they’ll have a lot to love when it finally airs in August.

Warning — Spoilers for Lanterns below!

    1. Sinestro is in the show.

However, it doesn’t seem like he’s the big baddie behind the series’ main conflict… at least, not yet. From what we saw, he’s been holed up in a space prison for some time — though he’s somehow still able to know about Hal Jordan’s movements, as well as the fact that he’s taking on an apprentice (or, as he forces Hal to admit, a replacement).

    2. Manhunters are the central villains of the series.

In one clip, exclusively shown at San Diego Comic Con, we saw Hal interrogate an alien masquerading as a former football player, quizzing him on various trivia about pros and famous <a href="https://comicvibe.com/top-10-adventure-games-to-play-right-now/” title=”Top 10 Adventure Games To Play Right Now”>games. However, when it came to other topics — Harry Potter and Barack Obama, specifically — the manhunter came up blank, leading to a hilarious back-and-forth between the two characters. What’s more, the manhunter claimed to have a nuke-level explosive embedded in his skeleton, saying he was sent to Earth on a top-secret mission. We’ll leave the end of the scene a secret to avoid too many spoilers, but it proves these beings are no small threat to the planet.

    3. Nathan Fillion crashed the San Diego Comic Con Panel.

Yep, that’s right — Guy Gardner himself (sans that horrible haircut) showed up midway through the panel to introduce a short clip from the show featuring his character. Thus far, we’re not sure what his role in the series will be, but it seems he’s bringing his signature irreverent flair from Superman into this newest story. (Fillion even wore a shirt that said, ‘Best Gardner Ever,’ clearly leaning into his role as a loveable knucklehead.)

    4. Laura Linney is playing a role in HBO’s Lanterns show.

This was one of the last big reveals from the panel. Co-creator Chris Mundy broke the news, saying she will be playing a Guardian, one of the beings in charge of the Green Lantern Corps. He was loath to share any more information, but promised her performance was nothing short of fantastic.

“Yes, Laura’s in the show,” Chris said. “Yes, she plays one of the Guardians, who has a lot to say to John about the role of being the Green Lantern. We were very lucky in a lot of ways… I’m not saying anything else, or else this panel will be mad at me.”

Aaron Pierre also chimed in, saying, “She’s like an auntie. She’s a phenomenal artist and creative, and we were massively blessed to have her grace us with her presence and her talent.”

    5. The Red Lanterns might make an appearance in the show.

At the tail end of the panel, one final clip was shown, where Hal and John duke it out over who will wear the ring. In the middle of their knock-down, drag-out brawl, a bright red light starts to shine through Hal’s room as a siren blares in the background. The clip cut off right after this, so it’s unclear if the Red Lanterns were behind the light, or if it was the manhunters. Given the color, we couldn’t help but speculate.

These are just a few of the most interesting tidbits revealed during the Lanterns SDCC panel, including an anecdote from Aaron Pierre explaining that he tore his bicep right before his final call to audition for the role of John Stewart.

    HBO’s Lanterns streams on August 16, 2026.
