Square Enix has created a Switch 2 storage dilemma with its most popular franchise. The publisher announced an August 4th Final Fantasy XIV release date for the MMORPG port. Nintendo fans also learned that they would have to reserve a hefty 117 GB of space on their consoles.
A new storage hog emerges
Previously, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was the largest Switch 2 game at over 102 GB. The only exception is the Kingdom Hearts Collection [I～III], demanding 131 GB. Final Fantasy XIV Online requires around 100 GB on the Xbox Series X|S and the PS5, with a more massive 140 GB on Windows. Even so, Nintendo supporters may have hoped for file compression sorcery.
The issue with FF14 is that expansions including Dawntrail have appeared at a steady clip. Whether buyers purchase the Starter, Complete, or Complete Collector’s Editions determines which add-ons are bundled. Because of a unified installer, the cheapest version won’t save any storage space on the handheld.
Since the original Final Fantasy XIV release date in 2010, textures have become higher in resolution. In addition, players encounter a growing collection of cutscenes, complemented by voice acting.
With the Final Fantasy VII remake series, buyers could install one Square Enix game at a time. On the other hand, subscribers devote slices of their hard drives to the MMORPG indefinitely. Given that the stock Switch 2 storage capacity is 256 GB, a 117 GB newcomer forces difficult decisions.
Pricey options are available
MicroSD Express cards are the obvious solution. Unfortunately, they aren’t expected to see lower prices amid the memory shortage. Despite rumors, it may be unlikely that Nintendo unveils a Pro or OLED refresh of the console with more space.
Straining budgets further, the Final Fantasy XIV Online Switch 2 port introduces a monthly fee after an optional free trial. Progression carries over, but former Xbox, PS5, and PC players need to sign up for a new subscription. Regardless, the convenience of exploring its worlds in a handheld form factor has excited followers.
