To ring in the new year, the beloved Sailor Moon cosplayer has unveiled one of her most ambitious creations yet.
After five years in the making, famed Sailor Moon cosplayer Princess Usako has unveiled her perfect new Princess Serenity dress. The cosplayer announced the completion of the dress on her X (formerly Twitter) account, sharing high-resolution photos of the finished product and behind-the-scenes details of its creation.
Princess Usako has been handcrafting intricate costumes and cosplaying as Usagi Tsukino and the Sailor Guardians for more than 20 years, and the latest Princess Serenity dress is reportedly one of about 40 she’s made in that time. Since the dress’s debut, Usako Hime’s original post has received over 615,000 views and 20,000 likes, and her story was featured in HuffPost Japan.
Sailor Moon cosplayer’s new Princess Serenity dress took five years to create
Princess Serenity’s iconic white and gold empire waist gown has been cosplayed many times in the past by Sailor Moon fans. Although easy to create in theory, it is extremely difficult to perfect each individual detail. Part of the appeal of Sailor Moon’s animation style is that it lends itself to creative cosplay, with designs that are simple enough to make the series recognizable, from simple replicas to complex recreations with new details.
Princess Usako’s latest gown was reportedly five years in the making, and details revealed in X include a bodice completely hand-beaded with citrine (yellow crystal) and aurora (iridescent overtones) pearls, and more than 50 meters of organza for the flawless sparkling petticoat and train. Princess Usako also said that she was inspired by the Universal Studios Japan-exclusive Princess Serenity dress and jewelry stand, and also posted a reference photo showing the origin of the design.
Who is Princess Serenity in the Sailor Moon anime and manga?
In Sailor Moon, Princess Serenity is a former princess of the Moon Kingdom and Usagi Tsukino’s past life identity. Her tragic romance with Prince Endymion, Mamoru Chiba/Tuxedo Mask’s past life identity, and her death during the fall of the Silver Millennium form the emotional backbone of the series’ overarching story.
Princess Serenity’s sacrifice led directly to the Sailor Guardians’ reincarnation on Earth, establishing Sailor Moon’s central themes of fate, love, and rebirth. The character’s design, particularly her white gown and golden crescent moon motif, becomes one of the series’ most enduring visual symbols, representing both Usagi’s royal heritage and the weight of her past life.
Usako Hime is well-known for its intricate designs, having previously recreated Usagi’s iconic Sailor Moon anime transformation sequence with an 18-meter (59-foot) rainbow-colored ribbon.
