You could own action figures of He-Man, Skeletor, Beast Man, and any of the other characters from Mattel’s Masters of the Universe line, but nobody would even bat an eye. This toy line was so popular during the ’80s and early ’90s that almost everyone had multiple action figures at home. However, you were to coolest kid in school if you had the massive Castle Grayskull playset. In fact, it’s still so popular with vintage collectors that a proof sheet for the play set’s packaging is currently going for $2,750 at Heritage Auctions. Not the play set, not its packaging, but a proof sheet for its packaging. Even the real Castle Grayskull on Eternia isn’t that valuable.

If you’re wondering what a proof sheet is, think of it as the final design sent to the printing company as a template for the packaging. It features the memorable front packaging art of Castle Grayskull, along with a window picture to show off its features, the side panel art, and color-control bars at the top. It’s what comes even before the prototype for the packaging can be created, so there’s no doubt that this is item is rare. In fact, Heritage notes that the AFA 85 graded sheet is the only graded one of its kind in existence, making it a one of a kind piece. You may have Castle Grayskull and its packaging, but this sheet of paper is rarer than both of them combined.
This Castle Grayskull Packaging Proof Sheet Is One Of A Kind

There are few vintage play sets that are as instantly recognizable as Castle Grayskull. From its titular skull shaped exterior to the creatively named jawbridge, it makes for a great stronghold for He-Man and Skeletor to fight over. However, the real magic is inside. Featuring a throne, a trap door, ladder, a weapons rack, and even a working elevator, it gave us so many options to play around with, making quiet Saturday afternoons fly by in no time. The evocative packaging would make the jaws of every ’90s kid drop as they begged their parents to get them one for their birthday. While it was quite an expensive purchase, even for that time, the play set’s value has only skyrocketed as interest in vintage toys has increased.
While getting your hands on a sealed version of the playset would be great, this proof sheet is even rarer than the famed castle itself. A quick look at eBay reveals that a boxed version of the Castle Grayskull play set could cost you anywhere between $500 and $1,500, which is nowhere near the going price of this sheet of paper. But when you think about it, this proof sheet is the first official step towards the production phase of the iconic castle, add to that the fact that it’s the only graded one of its kind, and you may have just found the rarest Masters of the Universe item on the collectors market. With over half a month left for bidding to end, it might end up costing as much as an actual small castle.
