Just two years after Ellen DeGeneres told the audience at a stand-up show that she was “going bye-bye,” the comedian has notions of returning to television. The twist? DeGeneres is now a U.K. resident, so her daydreams involve being on Channel 4 instead of NBC. During a Friday appearance on The Graham Norton Show, DeGeneres revealed that she’s thought about trying to do British TV.
“I’ve nothing really going on, and I really miss being on TV,” DeGeneres, who moved to the Cotswolds in 2024, said, per People. “I miss a lot about it — laughing with the writers and the audience. I think about doing stuff here.” She added that it seems “pretty easy to get on TV here.”
“You have a pottery show, you have a sewing show, and you even have a show about people watching TV shows,” DeGeneres said, referring to The Great Pottery Throw Down, The Great British Sewing Bee, and the British institution Gogglebox. She clearly knew not to come close to slandering The Great British Bake Off.
In 2020, DeGeneres faced reports that her daytime show fostered a “culture dominated by fear” for its employees, several of whom alleged they had faced racism and harassment from producers. She ended the show two years later and denied that those claims had anything to do with her leaving, saying instead that the show was “just not a challenge anymore.”
What wouldbe a challenge is returning to television across the pond. Are British people interested in her style of humor? Do they like jump-scare-based pranks over there? Luckily for DeGeneres, there are more baby steps she can take to find out. Personally, I would pay a lot of money to watch her participate in one of the U.K.’s many celeb-forward reality shows. Put her in the turret on the British Celebrity Traitorsand see what happens.
