Blockchain.com is seeking a route to bring event contracts and cryptocurrency derivatives to US customers, after applying to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) for two registrations. The applications cover a designated contract market (DCM) and a futures commission merchant (FCM), with products intended for retail and institutional investors, CNBC reported.
Two registrations, two functions
A DCM registration would allow the company to operate a futures exchange for event contracts. The FCM application would allow it to act as a broker for derivatives contracts; together, the approvals would provide a framework for Blockchain.com to offer its own US marketplace if the CFTC grants them.
The move builds on products the company has pursued outside the US. Blockchain.com announced in July that it planned to partner with Polymarket to integrate prediction markets into its app. CNBC reported that the platform has also offered prediction markets through Polymarket and perpetual futures powered by Hyperliquid to some international customers.
Perpetual futures are another part of the product mix connecting crypto platforms and event trading, as prediction-market operators add perpetual futures to their offerings. A CFTC-approved venue would give Blockchain.com a path to run its own event-contract marketplace in the US rather than depend solely on a third-party integration.
A crowded bid for regulated event trading
Blockchain.com is entering a field where other companies are also seeking federal approval to operate event-contract venues. CNBC reported that 11 other companies filed for DCM licenses in 2026, while the CFTC approved six new DCMs that year.
Other businesses are pursuing a foothold in the category, including Fliff’s prediction-market push and DraftKings’ licensed exchange effort. The applicants are approaching a market whose regulatory boundaries remain under dispute.
US courts are weighing disputes involving prediction-market operators including Kalshi and Polymarket, as state authorities bring cases alleging violations of laws governing sports and election betting. New Jersey officials also reportedly petitioned the US Supreme Court to consider the state’s case against Kalshi.
What Blockchain.com is seeking
The applications would place event contracts and crypto derivatives within a proposed US offering for both retail and institutional customers. The registrations are distinct, with one focused on the exchange venue and the other on derivatives brokerage.
| Application | Proposed function | Products or customers |
| DCM | Operate a futures exchange for event contracts | Event contracts for US retail and institutional customers |
| FCM | Broker derivatives contracts | Cryptocurrency derivatives for US retail and institutional customers |
CFTC Chair Michael Selig has claimed the agency has exclusive jurisdiction over prediction markets, according to the primary report. That position remains part of a wider federal-state dispute, rather than a settled outcome; approval of Blockchain.com’s applications would add another regulated crypto company to the US event-contract race.
