Dolly Parton, the singer, songwriter, actress and businesswoman who became one of the most beloved figures in American entertainment, has died. She was 80.

Parton’s publicist confirmed that she died on Tuesday in Nashville. She passed away at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center after a brief battle with cancer. Her family said she was surrounded by loved ones. A small private service will be held.

Parton was born in 1946 in a one-room cabin in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. She was one of twelve children. Her family had little money, but she often said the love in her home made up for it.

She began performing as a child. By her teens, she was already writing songs and appearing on local television and radio. She left for Nashville the day after graduating high school. She had one goal in mind: to make it in country music.

A career that reshaped a genre

Parton’s career spanned six decades. She wrote and recorded hundreds of songs, many of which became standards. “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You” are two of her best known works. The latter became an enormous hit for Whitney Houston in 1992, a fact Parton spoke about with pride rather than envy.

She won multiple Grammy Awards over her lifetime and received countless honors from the music industry. She was also inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Beyond the awards, she was known for an ability to write songs that felt personal to millions of listeners who had never met her.

Parton did not limit herself to music. She became a successful actress, starring in films such as “9 to 5,” “Steel Magnolias” and “Rhinestone.” Her performance in “9 to 5” alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin became a cultural touchstone, tackling workplace harassment and unequal pay in a way few comedies had before.

Dollywood and her business sense

Parton was also a shrewd businesswoman. She opened Dollywood, her namesake theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, in 1986. It grew into one of the most visited theme parks in the country. She kept close involvement with its operations for decades, treating it as both a business and a tribute to her home region.

Her business instincts extended well beyond entertainment. She also gave generously during times of crisis. When wildfires devastated parts of eastern Tennessee in 2016, she set up a fund that supported families who lost their homes. She rarely sought credit for these efforts. Friends and colleagues often said her generosity came from genuine care rather than image building.

Personal life

Parton was married to Carl Dean for nearly 60 years. He died in March 2025. Those close to her said the loss weighed on her deeply, and she spoke publicly about taking time to heal afterward, both emotionally and physically.

In the months before her death, Parton had faced ongoing health challenges. She had spoken about kidney and autoimmune issues and had canceled several public appearances due to doctor’s orders. Just ten days before she died, she canceled an appearance at Dollywood, saying she had been told not to travel.
