More than 50 years after Disney’s Robin Hood starred in its own Gold Key comic series, the beloved outlaw is finally returning for an all-new run.
The new Robin Hood series comes from Eisner-nominated writer Nate Cosby (Cheetara: Worldbreaker), who scripts the series and co-plots with Gargoyles creator Greg Weisman. Alessandro Ranaldi (Zootopia, Disney Villains: Hades) handles the artwork.
Inspired by Disney’s 1973 animated film, the series returns to Sherwood Forest for new adventures starring the familiar animal versions of Robin Hood and his supporting cast. Each issue will spotlight different characters while contributing to a larger interconnected story, with Maid Marian, Prince John, Friar Tuck, Lady Kluck, Alan-A-Dale, and others set to appear.
The first issue finds Robin getting particularly bold with his campaign against Prince John. He has broken into the prince’s castle every day for an entire week, although exactly what he has been stealing initially remains a mystery. Once Prince John discovers what’s missing, Robin suddenly has a much bigger problem on his hands.
“Robin Hood is SO cool…who the heck wouldn’t want to be a dashing, swaggering, smiling thief on the side of good?” Cosby said.
For Cosby, the series is an opportunity to revisit the qualities that have kept Disney’s interpretation of the character popular for decades, from the personality of Sherwood Forest itself to the dynamic between its colorful inhabitants.
“We’re gonna show old fans and new readers what makes Robin and his world so great…the beautiful, lived-in vibe of Sherwood Forest, the clashing-yet-mixing dynamics of British manners and southern charm, and especially the outsized personalities of mean ol’ Prince John, the angelic Maid Marian, and the people’s champion, the bandit Robin Hood!” Cosby added.
Weisman is similarly enthusiastic about getting his hands on Disney’s outlaw hero.
“I’m very psyched to be working on one of my all-time favorite versions of one of my all-time favorite characters!” Weisman said.
Disney’s Robin Hood returns to American comics
Despite the enduring popularity of Disney’s 1973 film, the company’s interpretation of Robin Hood has had a surprisingly limited presence in comics. According to Dynamite, this will be the character’s first major American comic book series in more than 50 years.
Ranaldi will bring the animated film’s anthropomorphic cast back to the page, with early artwork offering a first glimpse at his interpretation of Robin and the world of Sherwood Forest.
The launch will also come with an extensive selection of variant covers. Joshua Middleton and David Nakayama contribute covers, alongside two artists with plenty of experience drawing famous comic book archers: Hawkeye artist David Aja and Green Arrow artist Phil Hester. Nathan Szerdy also contributes a cover.
Dynamite will additionally offer a mystery blind bag containing variants and other surprises.
Disney’s Robin Hood originally arrived in theaters in 1973, transforming the English folk legend into an animated adventure populated by anthropomorphic animals. More than five decades later, Robin, Little John, Maid Marian, Prince John, and the rest of Sherwood Forest are getting another chance to tell their tales in comics.
