Disney+ spent years making Star Wars television feel almost constant. New characters, spin-offs, and live-action projects kept arriving, turning the streaming service into the franchise’s primary home between theatrical releases.
But after several projects struggled to generate the response Lucasfilm wanted, that approach appears to be cooling.
Recent disappointments have raised questions about the appetite for live-action Star Wars streaming shows. Even the franchise’s return to theaters in 2026 didn’t deliver the runaway success Disney might have hoped for.
Now, the 2027 calendar looks very different. Unless Lucasfilm has major announcements waiting, Star Wars fans could be looking at an unusually quiet year for live-action Disney+ programming.
And one familiar Jedi is carrying that entire side of the franchise.
Ahsoka Becomes Disney+’s Next Live-Action Star Wars Release
Ahsoka Season 2 is officially heading to Disney+ in 2027, nearly four years after the first season finished airing in October 2023.
The series follows Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker’s former apprentice, who first became a major part of Star Wars through animation. Rosario Dawson introduced Ahsoka to live action in The Mandalorian before the character received her own Disney+ series.
Season 2 will continue that story with Dawson returning alongside Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Lars Mikkelsen, Eman Esfandi, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Hayden Christensen.
Ahsoka’s return follows a busy 2026 for the franchise.
Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord arrived on Disney+ in April, while The Mandalorian & Grogu brought Star Wars back to theaters in May. The animated Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi followed on Disney+ in August.
From now on, the calendar becomes considerably thinner.
Ahsoka Is Holding Down Live-Action Star Wars on Disney+
As things stand, Ahsoka Season 2 is the only confirmed live-action Star Wars television series scheduled for Disney+ in 2027.
That’s a dramatic contrast with the earlier Disney+ era, when The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Ahsoka, The Acolyte, and Skeleton Crew created a steady pipeline of live-action Star Wars.
There are reasons Lucasfilm might be taking a more cautious approach.
The Mandalorian & Grogu didn’t become the enormous theatrical comeback some may have expected. The film grossed only around $345.2 million worldwide, making it the lowest-grossing live-action Star Wars film.
Disney+ has experienced its own setbacks.
The Acolyte initially generated significant interest but experienced a steep decline in audience during its run. Disney ultimately declined to move forward with a second season.
Rather than flooding Disney+ with multiple live-action Star Wars shows, Lucasfilm appears to be moving more deliberately.
The franchise isn’t disappearing from theaters. Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling, is scheduled for 2027.
For Disney+, though, Ahsoka currently stands alone.
Disney+ Has Plenty of Other Franchises to Lean On
The thinner Star Wars lineup doesn’t mean Disney+ will lack major programming in 2027. Other franchises are already building their future streaming slates, with Marvel remaining particularly active.
One of the biggest is Daredevil: Born Again. Charlie Cox stars as Matt Murdock alongside Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk, continuing a corner of Marvel television that began during the Netflix era.
Marvel Animation is also keeping X-Men ’97 alive beyond its second season, with Seasons 3 and 4 already in development.
Other Notable Projects
Other projects in the pipeline include:
- Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 — Charlie Cox’s Marvel series is expected to continue in 2027 and further expand its connections to Marvel’s former Netflix shows, including the return of familiar Defenders characters.
- X-Men ’97 — Marvel has committed to Seasons 3 and 4, giving the animated revival a longer future on Disney+ and making it one of Marvel’s more consistent streaming properties.
- Avengers: Mightiest Friends — The children’s animated series brings together younger versions of Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, and Black Panther. The show will expand Disney+’s Marvel programming for younger audiences.
- Afterlife with Archie — The Archie Comics adaptation takes its familiar characters into a zombie-apocalypse story, with Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa overseeing the project. The series offers Disney+ something noticeably different from its Marvel and Star Wars programming.
That gives Disney plenty of recognizable properties to fill its streaming calendar without relying as heavily on Star Wars. While Lucasfilm’s live-action output may be slowing down, Disney+ clearly isn’t abandoning franchise-driven programming. Instead, the service appears positioned to spread its biggest releases across several different brands in 2027.
Star Wars Is Entering a Much More Selective Disney+ Era
None of this means Disney has lost interest in Star Wars.
The early years of Disney+ treated live-action Star Wars television as one of the platform’s biggest engines. The Mandalorian helped establish the service, and Lucasfilm quickly followed it with an expanding lineup of spin-offs and limited series.
That pace hasn’t lasted.
Lucasfilm now has Star Wars: Starfighter carrying the theatrical side of the franchise in 2027, while Ahsoka Season 2 currently carries its live-action Disney+ lineup by itself.
More announcements could certainly come before 2027 arrives.
But based on what Lucasfilm has announced so far, the era of having several live-action Star Wars shows constantly moving through Disney+ appears to be over.
For now, one of Disney+’s biggest franchises has placed its live-action streaming future on the shoulders of one Jedi.
