Disney+ has scrapped the live

Another revival of a classic ’90s TV series has been scrapped at Disney+. Just weeks after it was announced that the streaming service wouldn’t be moving forward with a new Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers series, comes news that the live-action Gargoyles series has also been turned to stone.

Gargoyles Live-Action Series is No More

Three years ago, it was announced that Gary Dauberman and James Wan’s Atomic Monster production company were developing a live-action Gargoyles TV series for Disney+. However, in a recent interview with Comics Online, series creator Greg Weisman revealed that it’s no longer moving forward.

“Well, I know the live-action side of it is, uh, the Atomic Monster had the license to develop a live-action Gargoyles for Disney+, and that’s dead,” he said. “I have no idea about animation, but there are no current plans for live-action.“

That’s a shame. I was curious how the Gargoyles would translate to live-action.

Gargoyles

The animated Gargoyles series followed a group of nocturnal creatures who turn to stone during the day. They originally lived in medieval Scotland but were betrayed and cursed to remain frozen in stone until the castle “rises above the clouds.” After being transported to modern-day New York City, they are reawakened and serve as the city’s night-time protectors. The animated series was known for its dark tone and complex story arcs, which was surprising as it was produced by Disney. Gargoyles aired for three seasons before it was cancelled, but it quickly developed a passionate fan following who have kept the series alive for the last three decades.

Since the series concluded, Weisman has continued writing down ideas for episodes. “I never stopped thinking about Gargoyles,” he said. “I have so many of those black-and-white composition books. I have 12 of them with story ideas for Gargoyles, and I have a timeline that’s 500-something pages long. So, I’m never gonna run out of Gargoyles stories.“

There had been rumblings of a live-action Gargoyles movie since the animated series began. Jordan Peele even reportedly pitched a Gargoyles movie to Disney in 2018, but nothing ever came of it. There were rumours that Kenneth Branagh was attached to direct a Gargoyles movie several years ago, but Weisman quickly shot it down.
