The whole world has been captivated by the mystery of the six-episode miniseriesI’m Not Afraid, which ranked in theGlobal Top 10fornon-English-language series across 40 countries, including Spain, the United States, France, Italy, and Argentina, and garnered 4M views one week after its premiere.

Directed by Ernesto Contreras and starring Luis Alberti and Fátima Molina, the story takes us back to June 1986 to follow Miguel, a ten-year-old boy who discovers a dark family secret on an abandoned coffee farm.

Much of the success of this adaptation, based on the novel of the same name by Italian writer Niccolò Ammaniti, stems from its ability to explore — with great intensity — complicity, friendship, and the boundaries we’re willing to cross for those we love. It is a coming-of-age story that contrasts the innocence of childhood with the harshness of the adult world — which, in the end, may not be so different after all. All of this is enhanced by the unique atmosphere that only Veracruz’s landscapes can provide.

Here’s how different parts of the state were transformed to bring this thriller to life — a film that’s putting Veracruz on the world stage:

    • Architecture Steeped in History: To give the series a deep, mysterious atmosphere, the production team chose real locations at theHacienda de Pachoin Pacho Nuevo.

    • The Richness of Coffee Farming: To capture the realism of the plot, filming moved to authentic coffee-growing regions. The production team set up their cameras in vibrant areas such as theBola de Oro Finca Roma CoffeePlantationsin Emiliano Zapata and in “the coffee capital,”Coatepec.

    • Stunning Natural Beauty: For outdoor scenes that call for an air of suspense and mysticism, the spectacular mountains of Veracruz were key. The team ventured deep into theMist Forest(in the Cruz Blanca and Las Lajas area) and took advantage of the dense vegetation and historic sites in municipalities such asTeoceloandXico.

    • Xalapa, Veracruz’s Infrastructure as a Filming Location: In addition to its stunning natural landscapes, the capital of Veracruz and its surrounding areas proved to have the necessary infrastructure for a production of this magnitude. Venues as diverse as theCentral de Abastos, theIMSS Union building, and the facilities of theRTV Xalapatelevision station opened their doors, transforming before the cameras to bring the series’ world to life.

In addition to the settings,I’m Not Afraidincorporates Veracruz mythology — the chaneques, the cloud forest, and the huezquixtle masks of Xico — as an essential part of its narrative, weaving local folklore into a story that is now captivating audiences in 40 countries.
