Dermot Mulroney is breaking his silence about his reported exit from “Chicago Fire.”

In an appearance at Flashback Weekend Chicago Horror Convention, Mulroney reflected on his brief time on the NBC firefighter drama, which he is set to leave in the upcoming 15th season, premiering in October.

In late July, Deadline reported on Mulroney’s departure from “Chicago Fire” amid other cast shakeups. The actor confirmed the news at the event.

“This season, sadly, I have one episode,” Mulroney said, adding that he was scheduled to film his final scenes. “They write the character off, so we gave it our all for two seasons. They wrote an incredible storyline that put me, as an actor, on a high challenge.”

“Sad to see it go,” he continued.

Mulroney joined the series in 2024

Mulroney, known for “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” “Shameless,” and “Scream VI,” played Chief Dom Pascal on “Chicago Fire” and joined the cast in Season 13. He went on hiatus in the second half of Season 14.

At the convention, the 62-year-old veteran actor shared that it was his first time on network television with 22 episodes, and he “loved every minute of it.”

“(I) became friends with this incredible crew of people. Some have been there 15 years,” Mulroney said at the event. “They gave me incredibly challenging scenes. If some of you saw that Season 13 I was in.”

Mulroney also spoke about how much Firehouse 51 is beloved in the Windy City, “I can’t tell you how many people come up and they much rather have an autograph on ‘Scream VI,’ but they’re getting Chief Pascal for their dad. It’s an amazing thing to see.”

“That is what makes it that much more– I wouldn’t say bittersweet. It’s bitter to have to leave that,” he shared.

Mulroney is expected to star in an upcoming sequel of the 2005 comedy drama “The Family Stone,” he confirmed in a May 20 episode of “The Tangle With Kyle Ridley” podcast.
