For the first time in a long time (as in ever, in some respects), DC’s heroine Vixen is getting a solo ongoing series.
Announced at DC’s Next Level panel during Comic-Con International: San Diego 2026, the new Vixen series by writer Stephanie Williams and artist Khary Randolph is part of the company’s ‘Next Level’ initiatives to pair creators with characters they feel strongly about. And boy, does Williams feel strongly about Vixen.
“Two years. Two long years. I remember sharing on Threads that I had a Vixen pitch that was burning a hole in my drafts,” Williams says during the panel. “I want this book to be [Vixen] telling us who she is. If Rihanna decided to be a superhero [that’d be Vixen], but not Tyra Banks though.”
Joshua Williamson, who in addition to being a freelance writer DC is also a consultant on some books, says Stephanie Williams’ pitch was bigger than expected — 20 pages — but that after reading it, he “could see how passionate you were about that character. We wanted people who loved these characters [to work on them]. We were missing out on this whole Vixen world this whole time.”
This new Vixen ongoing follows the recent Vixen: NYC limited series which was serialized on WEBTOON and the DC Universe Infinite App. Although Vixen has had series in the past, this new one will actually be her first-ever ongoing series.
This comes in the wake of a short-lived boycott of DC titles over the lack of Black-led ongoing comic books in the main DC Universe. Williams recently said that Black-led comics face a challenge to sell at a sustainable level for an ongoing series, and should she get an opportunity for such a Black-led superhero comic such as Vixen she challenged readers to step up and support it.
“A book can be beloved and still die because the pre-orders didn’t signal demand in time,” the writer says, referring to readers signalling interest with pre-orders more. “So when readers say they want more diverse books, more Black-led titles, more creators like the ones who got these nominations, the most concrete way to back that up is to pre-order. It’s a vote that the industry actually counts, I mean what I said with love: ‘I want those pre-orders through the roof. Consider it a challenge because we want to give readers the stories they’re asking for.’”
