Per a Facebook post from his family, prolific comic book letterer Dave Lanphear died unexpectedly sometime last week. Lanphear lettered countless comics for Marvel, CrossGen, Valiant, DC, and more, including the original Thunderbolts run, Kurt Busiek and George Pérez‘s Avengers, The Mighty Avengers, Secret Warriors, Immortal Iron Fist, and X-Men: Magneto Testament, sometimes in collaboration with his wife Natalie Lanphear. He also worked as a storyboard artist, designer, illustrator, inker, and as CrossGen’s design director from 1999 to 2004.
Lanphear was born in Michgan on June 5, 1968, and attended California State University, where he studied commercial art with a minor in journalism from 1985 to 1988. Some of his earliest work was for Malibu Comics in the early 1990s, on books like Prime, Mortal Kombat, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Terminator 2: Judgment Day — Cybernetic Dawn. He also worked frequently for Valiant/Acclaim, Chaos! Comics, Image, Dark Horse, and Marvel during the decade, as well as on DC’s Tangent Comics line.
After CrossGen was acquired by Disney in 2004, Lanphear founded his own company, Artmonkeys Studios, and largely freelanced for Marvel, lettering the Stan Lee Meets books, Avengers Origins, the original Spider-Man Noir, The Mighty Avengers, Secret Warriors et al., and many more. His logo design work included the solo Young Avengers books, Penance: Relentless, and X-Infernus. His last work for the company was 2013’s Iron Man #258.1-4, the miniseries that wound the clock back to 1990’s Armor Wars II.
Afterwards, he lettered regularly for the revived Valiant, working on Harbinger, Archer & Armstrong, Bloodshoot etc. until the DMG buyout in 2018. He also worked on Dynamite’s Legenderry and Twilight Zone series, and DC’s Future Quest and Superman ’78, as well as their 2025 crossover Harley Quinn x Elvira. Other titles over his long career included Hellshock, Danger Girl, Mystic, Grendel, Mage, Shirtless Bear-Fighter!, and Star Wars: General Grievous. His storyboarding credits included the first two episodes of the animated Ultimate Spider-Man series from 2012.
Lanphear was recognized during his lifetime with two Eisner Awards in 2011, for Best Graphic Album and Best Anthology (respectively for Return of the Dapper Men, and Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard), and was nominated for Best Letterer at the Harveys in 2012, 2014, and 2016 (for Secret Avengers, Quantum and Woody, and Valiant’s Divinity). He is survived by his wife, Natalie (the co-owner and office manager of Artmonkeys Studios), and his sister Tera Lanphear.
Letterer Troy Peteriwrote an emotional tribute, saying, “Dave was my first friend when I moved to Los Angeles, where I literally didn’t know ANYone. He taught me SO much about art and art history and animation and just STUFF, in general. Always called him my flakey Obi-Wan Kenobi, because his work ethic could be a bit flaky. Over time he and I became like brothers.”
Matthew Dow Smithhonored him, writing, “I’m having a hard time even thinking what to say, but Dave’s work was a key part of CrossGen and he was so incredibly kind to me in my short time there and in the years after. He is going to be very, very missed.” Chris Fenogliosaid, “Dave lettered the first book I ever colored (Red City from Image) and was always incredibly kind and supportive. [He was] a wonderful human who will be deeply missed. Rest well, bud.”
