With the fourth season of AMC’s acclaimed noir thriller Dark Winds having just touched down on Netflix this July, fans are already looking ahead to the future of the Navajo Tribal Police. The good news? Season 5 is officially happening. Here is our comprehensive preview of everything we know so far about Dark Winds season 5, including new cast members, plot teases, and when we expect it to drop on Netflix.

It’s been a fantastic couple of years for AMC titles on Netflix. As we’ve seen with the most popular AMC series on Netflix that have come over the past few years, as part of a strategic licensing agreement, it has breathed massive new life into these linear network hits. Dark Winds, based on the Leaphorn & Chee novels by Tony Hillerman, is easily one of the crown jewels of this deal. Holding a rare 100% Rotten Tomatoes score across its first three seasons, the psychological thriller continues to captivate audiences around the globe.

According to Netflix Engagement Report data from 2023 through to mid-2026, Dark Winds has now picked up 233 million viewing hours on Netflix, equating to 48.5M views. Netflix in most regions around the world carries the show.

Following a gritty detour to 1970s Los Angeles in season 4, fans will be thrilled to hear that season 5 is bringing the action back to its roots.

Here is everything we know about Dark Winds season 5.

Has AMC renewed Dark Winds for Season 5?

Yes! In a massive vote of confidence, AMC Networks officially renewed Dark Winds for a fifth season on February 5, 2026—more than a week before season 4 even premiered.

“Over four seasons, Dark Winds has masterfully blended compelling character-driven stories, Navajo culture, spirituality, and breathtaking cinematography,” said Dan McDermott, Chief Content Officer of AMC Networks.

As an added bonus behind the camera, series star and executive producer Zahn McClarnon will be making his television directorial debut in season 5. The show is created by Graham Roland and showrun by John Wirth, with George R.R. Martin and the late Robert Redford among its executive producers.

What is the production status of Season 5?

If you’re eager for the new season, you’ll be happy to know it’s already in the can!

According to production sheets, filming for the fifth season got underway in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on March 16, 2026, and officially wrapped on June 11, 2026. The new season will consist of eight hour-long episodes, sporting a healthy estimated episodic budget of roughly $5 million.

What to expect from Dark Winds Season 5 (and New Cast Additions!)

Warning: The following section contains spoilers. Proceed with caution!

While AMC is keeping the overarching central mystery tightly under wraps, recent casting announcements have given us a massive peek behind the curtain regarding character arcs and the fallout of season 4.

The biggest bombshell? The murder of Scarborough Police Department Acting Chief Gordo Sena (played by A. Martinez). We now know that John Hoogenakker (Dopesick, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan) has been cast as a series regular playing Sheriff Mark Bishop, Gordo’s younger, more buttoned-up successor. According to character descriptions, Bishop allows Leaphorn to join the investigation into Gordo’s murder, but the two will quickly clash over jurisdictional boundaries and who is actually running the show.

On the personal front, we have a wedding to plan! After seasons of build-up, Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten) and Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) are tying the knot. Geraldine Keams is returning as her season 1 character, Alice Benally (Emma Leaphorn’s mother), to help Emma prepare for the traditional Navajo wedding.

However, Bernadette’s life is about to get complicated in other ways. Gregory Cruz (Mayans M.C.) has joined the cast in a recurring role as Ed Manuelito, Bernadette’s biological father. A WWII veteran suffering from PTSD, Ed abandoned Bernadette at a boarding school following her mother’s untimely death. Now, fifteen years later and armed with newfound sobriety and church support, he’s returning to try and make amends.

Returning core cast members for season 5 include:

    • Zahn McClarnon as Lt. Joe Leaphorn
    • Kiowa Gordon as Jim Chee
    • Jessica Matten as Bernadette Manuelito
    • Deanna Allison as Emma Leaphorn
    • Isabel Deroy-Olson as Billie Tsosie
    • Elva Guerra as Sally Growing Thunder
    • Paola Núñez as Luisa Alvarado

Dark Winds Season 4 First Look

When will Dark Winds Season 5 be on Netflix?

AMC has confirmed that season 5 will debut on AMC and AMC+ in 2027. Given that production wrapped in June 2026, we fully expect it to premiere on the network in the first quarter of 2027 (similar to season 4’s February premiere).

So, when does that mean Netflix users can expect it? We can track the likelihood based on past AMC additions. As we covered extensively in our AMC shows on Netflix  preview and our Dark Winds Season 4 Netflix US release date tracker, Netflix has been getting the new seasons relatively fast after they conclude on AMC.

Here is the historical Netflix release pattern:

    • Seasons 1 & 2: August 19, 2024
    • Season 3: October 27, 2025
    • Season 4: July 5, 2026 (Roughly 5 months after its AMC premiere)

If season 5 hits AMC in early 2027, you can comfortably expect Dark Winds season 5 to arrive on Netflix in summer or early fall 2027.

Of course, this assumes that Netflix and AMC keep agreeing to license new series, and given it’s pulling in such good viewership, we’d bet on that happening, but even if Netflix doesn’t get new seasons, the show will remain on AMC and AMC+.

As always, we will keep you posted as soon as an exact release date is announced.
