Criminal Trailer released, based on the graphic novels by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips

Prime Video has released a teaser trailer for Criminal, based on the graphic novel series by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, which features an “interlocking universe” of crime stories – episodes 1-4 premiering on the streamer on 13th January 2027.

Based on the multiple Eisner Award-winning comic book series from Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, Criminal takes viewers into a world of thieves, killers, and con artists whose lives are shaped by crime, family, and the consequences of their pasts.

Originally launched in 2006, Criminal has become one of the most celebrated crime comics of the last two decades, with Brubaker and Phillips continuing to expand its interconnected world and redefine what crime comics can be.

TheCriminal TV adaptation begins with the story of two friends, Leo Patterson (Charlie Hunnam) and Ricky Lawless (Gus Halper), one trying to fight his way out of the world of crime they were raised in, the other desperate to follow in the footsteps of his father, a legendary outlaw. And when Ricky’s older brother Tracy (Luke Evans) returns home from the Army, their tragic family history comes home with him. Drawn into their orbit are Greta (Adria Arjona), a sharp-tongued car thief from Leo’s past, and Mallory (Emilia Clarke), Ricky’s girlfriend, who fears what he’ll do to get by. Gunfights, heists, and tragic romance are the order of the day, but will anyone make it out alive?

The first season takes its cues from the first two story arcs of the comic series, Criminal, Volume 1: Coward and Criminal, Volume 2: Lawless.

If you’re looking to get familiar with Criminal before the series arrives, there’s no better place to start than the comics themselves.

    • Criminal comes to Prime Video in two parts on 13th and 27th January 2027

Starring  Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Gus Halper (Rustin), Luke Evans (The Party) and Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones)

By  Ed Brubaker (Writer), Sean Phillips (Artist)
ISBN: 978-1534370906 | AmazonUK Affiliate Link

In this first installment of the bestselling, multiple Eisner Award winning crime noir series, readers meet Leo, a world-class pickpocket who is pressed into helping the cops pull off a heist. But when the job goes terribly wrong, Leo must go into hiding, his dire situation escalates, forcing the thief to put his skills to the test.

Originally published in 2007, Criminal Volume 1: Coward is just the beginning of the critically acclaimed comic book series from Ed Brubaker & Sean Phillips―the creative team behind Fatale, Night Fever, Where the Body Was, and more.

Criminal Volume 2: Lawless (New Edition)
By  Ed Brubaker (Writer), Sean Phillips (Artist)
ISBN: 978-1534385078 | AmazonUK Affiliate Link

Criminal Volume 2: Lawless is story of brotherly love and hate, as Tracy Lawless returns home to find out who murdered his kid brother, and how much their family history has doomed them both. This is where Brubaker and Phillips take the world they created in Volume 1 and begin stretching the boundaries of what crime comics can be.

Ed Brubaker is one of the most acclaimed writers in comics, winning five best writer Eisner and Harvey Awards in the last ten years. His bestselling work with Sean Phillips on Criminal, Incognito, Fatale, and The Fade Out has been translated around the world to great acclaim, and Marvel’s movies featuring his co-creation, The Winter Soldier, have all been international blockbusters.

Ed lives in Los Angeles with his wife and their crazy dog, where he works in comics, film, and television, most recently on HBO’s new hit series Westworld.

Drawing comics professionally since the age of fifteen, Eisner Award winning Sean Phillips, who lives in the Lake District, has worked for all the major publishers. Since drawing Sleeper, Hellblazer, Batman, X-Men, Marvel Zombies, and Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, Sean has concentrated on creator-owned books including Criminal, Kill Or Be Killed, Incognito, Fatale and The Fade Out.
