Comic book legends will come to life in Courtenay this weekend.
Second Stage players will bring some of the world’s favourite superheroes to life on Nov. 8 and Nov. 9 in Do Superheroes Grow Old?, a comedy stage production by playwright Jean Higginson.
“I have always been curious about interviews I’ve heard with authors describing how their characters have made them change elements of their novel or play,” Higginson said. “I wondered how that works in actual practice, and so I began to imagine characters coming to life and actually visiting their authors.”
The play follows a writer at a crossroads. Exhausted by her long-running superhero film series, her own superheroes and villains start to manifest guidance and nudge her toward a fresh writing direction.
“Audiences can expect a highly creative play within a play motif that balances sharp with deep, far-reaching questions,” said a press release on the stage production.
The press release mentions a moment where supervillain Medusa pleads her case to her creator.
“Make the characters more mature, the plot more humorous, and give it a happy ending for everyone,” Medusa begs. “You have no idea how sick I am of always being the monster who gets defeated in the end. I’m getting old. I want to have some fun for a change.”
The play will carry themes such as aging, friendship, creativity, and the rewriting of destiny.
Actors will take the stage at the Florence Filberg Centre Conference Hall at 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 8 and 9. Tickets can be purchased at the Florence Filberg Centre reception or at the door for $15. The event is an Evergreen Club fundraiser, with proceeds from ticket sales supporting a non-profit organization for senior (55+) recreational activities.
