For the better part of two decades, superhero movies have been chasing the same formula. The costumes get bigger, the explosions get louder, and every conflict somehow ends with another city-leveling battle in the sky. Even the best entries often feel like they’re following a familiar playbook.
Then DC Studios dropped the first trailer for Clayface.
This isn’t another superhero movie.
It’s a horror film that just happens to exist in the Batman Universe.
From the moment the trailer begins, it’s clear director James Watkins isn’t interested in making another cape-and-cowl spectacle. Instead, the film embraces psychological dread, grotesque physical transformation, and the terrifying loss of identity. The DNA of The Fly, The Invisible Man, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and classic body horror is all over this trailer. If DC delivers on what it’s teasing, Clayface could become one of the most original comic book films ever released.

Matt Hagen isn’t introduced as a supervillain. That’s the perfect setup for body horror. The physical transformation is frightening enough, but the real horror lies in watching someone lose not only their face but their identity, their sanity, and ultimately their humanity.
More Cronenberg Than Comic Books
What impressed me most about the trailer wasn’t the visual effects. It was the atmosphere. Everything feels uneasy. Every transformation looks painful instead of empowering. Every scene carries an underlying tension that something is terribly wrong. Rather than celebrating incredible powers, the trailer makes them look like a curse.
That’s exactly what body horror should do. It reminded me less of modern superhero movies and more of David Cronenberg‘s approach to horror, where the human body becomes something unfamiliar and terrifying. Instead of asking, ‘What if someone had incredible abilities?’ Clayface asks a far more disturbing question: What if becoming something extraordinary meant losing yourself forever?
Batman’s Most Tragic Villain
Clayface first appeared in DC Comics in 1940 (Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane), but many fans were introduced to the character through Batman: The Animated Series. Bruce Timm and Paul Dinitransformed Clayface from an interesting villain into one of Batman’s most heartbreaking adversaries. Their legendary two-part episode, Feat of Clay, remains one of the finest stories ever told in superhero animation.
Watching this trailer, I couldn’t help but think back to Feat of Clay. It feels like DC understands what made that story resonate in the first place.
The Creative Team Gives Me Confidence
One reason my expectations immediately jumped was seeing Mike Flanagan‘s name attached to the project. Flanagan has built a reputation telling horror stories that care as much about their characters as their scares. His involvement, alongside screenwriter Hossein Amini and director James Watkins, suggests this won’t simply be a showcase for disturbing special effects.
Tom Rhys Harries stars as Matt Hagen alongside Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella,Eddie Marsan, Nancy Carroll, and Joshua James. With producers Matt Reeves, James Gunn, Peter Safran, and Lynn Harrisoverseeing the project, DC clearly isn’t treating Clayface like a minor spin-off.
A Different Kind of Gotham Story
Interestingly, the trailer barely feels like Gotham City. Instead of relying on familiar landmarks or Batman himself, the story feels isolated, claustrophobic, and deeply personal. That’s exactly why it works. The Batman universe has always been able to support detective stories, crime thrillers, psychological dramas, and supernatural horror. Clayface belongs in horror.
Could This Change Comic Book Movies?
The biggest question I walked away with wasn’t whether the movie would be good. It was whether DC is finally willing to let comic book movies become something completely different. If Clayface commits to its horrific premise all the way through, audiences may be talking about this film for years.
The best trailers don’t explain everything. They make you curious. They make you uncomfortable. Most importantly, they leave you wanting more.
Instead of another costumed showdown, DC Studios appears to be delivering a tragic psychological horror film about obsession, identity, vanity, revenge, and the terrifying consequences of trying to become someone else.
If that’s the movie waiting for us this October, Clayface won’t just stand apart from other comic book films. It could become one of the boldest movies DC has ever made.
