We’ve seen Nintendo partner with numerous companies over the years for mainline Zelda titles as well as spin-offs, but one of the first examples of this came from Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Seasons, two titles that saw Capcom and Nintendo team up. While the collab led to a duo of fantastic Zelda titles, it sounds like Capcom had to go to extreme lengths to make the projects a reality.

Discovered in a 1999 issue of German magazine Total, Capcom’s Yoshiki Okamoto revealed the story of how Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Seasons came to be. Apparently the whole thing started off with Okamoto’s desire to port the original Legend of Zelda to the Game Boy Color, which Nintendo shot down. This led to somewhat of an argument with a rather heated exchange.

“I especially like Zelda [1]. But Nintendo wouldn’t port it to Game Boy Color. So I told Mr. Miyamoto I’d produce it myself… but we couldn’t come to an agreement. So in the end, I threatened him. I said if Nintendo’s not up for it, we’ll release an identical game with different characters and just call it something else.”

As the interview was just text, it’s hard to read exactly how the situation played out. You’d have to imagine that this “threat” was just a bit of playful banter back and forth, but we don’t know for sure. Whatever the case, it’s clear the argument that Okamoto made eventually got Miyamoto on-board, and gamers got to experience both Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons in 2001.
