A comic convention built specifically for fans who find typical pop-culture events overwhelming is coming back to Weston next Saturday. Calmer Con Boston will take over the Meadowbrook School at 10 Farm Road from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on September 12, offering cosplay, artist tables, tabletop gaming and Jedi training in an environment engineered to keep noise, lights and crowds from tipping into sensory overload.
The free event, open to fans of all ages, is designed to meet the needs of attendees dealing with neurodiversity, sensory sensitivity, anxiety and autism It’s organized by the nonprofit Calm Passion alongside the Boston Comic Arts Foundation, which has supported Calm Passion’s Boston-area conventions since 2023. Calm Passion was organized in 2016 to create sensory-friendly events and has since held several of them, including presenting Boston-area conventions free of charge since 2023, per the same report. The organization’s founder, Adam Wilson, serves as director and has an autistic son named Logan. Wilson has said the event aims to provide an authentic convention experience in a sensory-friendlier environment.
A Father’s Search for a Better Convention
Wilson’s motivation traces back to encountering a lack of sensory accommodations for Logan at conventional pop-culture events, which led him to found Calm Passion and launch the first Calmer Con in Central Massachusetts in 2018, according to Calm Passion. Before settling into its now-annual Boston-area event, the organization even took the concept out of state, hosting a Southeast Calmer Con in Florida in May 2021 that split attendance into separate morning and afternoon sessions specifically to control crowd density, as reported by Clay Today.
Co-organizer Boston Comic Arts Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that also produces other major New England comic arts programs, including the Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo and the Boston Comics in Color Festival. That broader portfolio situates Calmer Con within a regional push for independent comic arts advocacy rather than treating it as a one-off event.
Guests, Panels and a Growing Slate of Activities
This year’s guest lineup includes Ellen Crenshaw, author of the graphic novel adaptations of The Baby-Sitters Club, and Judd Winick, author of Hilo, per Boston.com. The 2026 roster also features miniature painter Phil the Glacial Geek Hall and ADHD Essentials podcast host Brendan Mahan
The convention includes cosplayers, artist tables, vendors, a cosplay contest, artist tutorials, a magic show, family tri2 and up will offer drawing workshops, crafting and a manga library relaxation area. The expanded 2026 schedule also introduces new gaming activities, including tabletop RPG sessions like Goblin Errands, Pokémon card tutorials and video game tournaments
Built-In Accommodations, From Energy Ratings to ASL
Every activity on the 2026 schedule carries a specific energy level rating so attendees can choose settings that match their comfort, while American Sign Language interpreters will be available for deaf and hard-of-hearing guests, per BostonCentral. The venue also includes a designated calmer space where attendees can step away to relax and recharge during the day.
To preserve that low-stimulation environment, Calmer Con enforces sound and lighting controls across the venue, including requiring live performances of video game and animation music to stay within reduced volume decibel limits, according to a report from Convention Scene. The convention also incorporates a Professional Resource Fair featuring regional service organizations such as ANNA Autism Care, giving Massachusetts families a chance to connect directly with clinical and community support resources during the event, per Natick Town News.
Part of a Broader Accessibility Push
Calmer Con’s approach reflects a wider shift happening across the convention industry. In April 2025, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that 1 in 31 eight-year-old children in the United States, or 3.2 percent, has been identified with autism spectrum disorder, up from 1 in 36 reported in 2023. Major public venues have taken notice: the Pennsylvania Convention Center installed permanent, dedicated sensory rooms equipped with bubble tubes, dimmable lights and sensory kits in January 2026, according to the Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority.
For families in Weston and across Massachusetts, Calmer Con Boston offers a chance to experience the trappings of a traditional comic con — cosplay, artist alleys, guest panels — without the sensory gauntlet that often comes with them. Registration remains open ahead of the September 12 event at Meadowbrook School.
