Bethesda is “looking into” bringing Oblivion Remastered’s Switch 2 optimisations to PC, PlayStation, and Xbox
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has been released on Switch 2, arriving with new optimisations that allowed the game to run on Nintendo’s mobile gaming hardware. This new version has arrived over a year after Oblivion Remastered’s last update for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, leaving many fans wondering: is a performance update coming?
While update 1.2 delivered significant performance benefits, the game remains an incredibly demanding title on PC and consoles. The game also suffers from frequent traversal stutters and other performance issues. Simply put, the game does not run as well as it could on PC and consoles. Now that fans know that the game has Switch 2-specific optimisations, they are angry that their existing PC and console editions lack these improvements.

Nintendo’s Switch 2 isn’t an overly powerful piece of hardware. While it is a capable gaming machine, it uses CPU and GPU hardware that is several generations old. There are reports that Oblivion Remastered offers more stable performance than other platforms. If this is true, there is no reason why the game’s other versions couldn’t be optimised to run better.
While Bethesda has not committed to a PC performance update, not doing it after acknowledging this fan feedback will result in a stronger backlash. Hopefully, Bethesda will be able to improve Oblivion Remastered’s existing PC and console versions. If not, Oblivion fans will be right to be furious.

If nothing else, it is disappointing that Oblivion Remastered hasn’t been updated in over a year. The game would benefit from further CPU optimisations and something that would remove or lessen the impact of traversal stutters. An upgrade to a newer version of Unreal Engine 5 could also deliver significant performance gains. After all, newer versions of Unreal Engine 5 deliver improved versions of Lumen that offer increased graphical fidelity and performance.
If Oblivion Remastered’s Switch 2 optimisations can deliver an improved experience on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation, there is no reason for Microsoft and Bethesda not to bring these improvements to these platforms. After all, The Elder Scrolls is a major franchise for Xbox. Furthermore, the planned launch of The Elder Scrolls 6 (some day in the far future…) will help drum up interest in older games in the series.
