Best Buy Customer Support Removed A 32GB DDR5 RAM Stick From Gaming Laptop After Charging Full Amount For The 64GB Configuration; Says Upgraded RAM Incompatible

A gaming laptop with 64GB of DDR5 RAM offers tremendous futureproofing for the user, assuming that the machine supports this configuration. Best Buy apparently did not believe so, and according to the owner, after charging him the full amount for the Lenovo Legion 5, the retailer removed one stick of 32GB RAM from the system and shipped the entire unit with the other stick removed, claiming that the additional memory was not compatible with this system.

The Legion 5 owner says his gaming laptop has been functioning without any issues for the past 8 months with the 64GB RAM installed; 32GB stick was likely defective, but wasn’t replaced

On Reddit, “GRINZ_DOCTOR” had purchased a solid configuration that included a Core i9-14900HX, RTX 5070, a 2TB SSD, and 64GB of DDR5 RAM, plus a 1TB Dock Station. According to the owner, the gaming laptop worked fine for 8 months before it broke down, so it had to be sent to Best Buy under its warranty program. Upon inspection, Best Buy stated that the maximum supported memory on this machine was 32GB, not 64GB, so it removed that one stick of RAM.

What is puzzling is that instead of sending a new 32GB DDR5 RAM module back to the owner, as the total 64GB was purchased as part of the original gaming laptop’s configuration, Best Buy shipped the old one, which was likely defective and may be the reason why the machine broke down. Considering that a single SODIMM unit operating at 5,600MT/s can <a href="https://amzn.to/4wvxeJI" rel="nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>cost as much as $349.99 on online retailers like Amazon, Best Buy should have at least sent over a functional replacement memory stick.

If the Legion 5 was working without any problems for 8 months, it means one of the sticks failed after that time, either due to overheating (DDR5 RAM sticks are prone to higher temperatures, especially in constrained spaces) or for another reason, and the buyer is entitled to a replacement. On Reddit, some people have recommended that GRINZ_DOCTOR continue escalating the problem to Best Buy until a resolution is achieved.

From what we can gather, Best Buy did not wish to pay for the RAM stick’s replacement due to the insane prices that the industry has to deal with. What is interesting is that the updated version of Lenovo’s Legion 5, sporting Intel’s Core Ultra 7 and Core Ultra 9 family of processors, also mentions on the company’s website that it supports up to 32GB of RAM, but that could just be an option from the laptop maker, meaning that users are free to upgrade according to their needs.
