Just when you think you’re finally done for good, Baldur’s Gate 3 finds yet another way to draw you back in.

Larian Studios’ hit 2023 TRPG has dropped a surprise update that surely demands yet another playthrough; after all, think of the narrative possibilities you’re yet to encounter.

Baldur’s Gate 3 now supports Xbox Play Anywhere with a free update dropping across all platforms in order to support this new feature.

If you’re not familiar with Xbox Play Anywhere, it essentially allows you to enjoy the same playthrough across Xbox, PC, and supported handhelds at no additional cost.

That means you could start Baldur’s Gate 3 on console at home before carrying on with your playthroughweekend away

So this update doesn’t necessarily change anything within the game, but that doesn’t mean you should disregard it if you’re of the impression that your time with Baldur’s Gate 3 is over.

    Baldur's Gate 3,

As I said, there are likely tons of narrative possibilities you’re yet to encounter.

The only problem is that Baldur’s Gate 3is a time consuming game and requires a fair bit of commitment, but just think how much easier it’s now going to be to embark on a playthrough with Xbox Play Anywhere enabled.

Fans seem to be pleased. “Thank you. Gives me an excuse to start a second playthrough on my Xbox Ally,” said one response to the announcement, echoing my own thoughts.

“Oh, I was waiting for a loooong time for this, thanks,” added another.

Baldur’s Gate 4 is yet to find a studio with Larian working on Divinity

Unfortunately, we’re never actually going to see any true new content for Baldur’s Gate 3 – outside of the world of modding anyway.

That’s because Larian Studios is now working on a new instalment in the Divinity series, simply titled Divinity.

It’s believed to be somewhat of a soft reboot, almost like God of War (2018) was for Santa Monica’s IP; Divinity isn’t expected to override the existing canon, but it should act as the perfect step into the franchise for newbies.

The title was revealed at 2025 The Game Awards with a very gory cinematic trailer after Larian set up a mysterious hell statue in the Californian desert.

Divinitywill be a turn-based RPG so it should still appeal to those who like Baldur’s Gate 3’s general formula; single-player and multiplayer options are expected to be included.

As for the future of the Baldur’s Gate franchise, that remains up in the air.

Wizards of the Coast owns the rights for a potential ‘Baldur’s Gate 4’ and hopes for it to be made, but hasn’t currently optioned them to a studio.

Wizards of the Coast-owned studio Invoke is, however, creating Warlock – a third-person single-player action-adventure set within the Dungeons & Dragons universe.

Little has been shown of the game beyond a cinematic trailer but we know that it’s slated to land in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

It could be one to watch if you’re mourning the absence of Baldur’s Gate – and, of course, there’s HBO’s Baldur’s Gate TV show in development which could bring back some original cast members from the recent game.
