    AnyPS5 achieves 100% PS5-to-PC GPU Shader Translation

AnyPS5 achieves 100% PS5-to-PC GPU Shader Instruction Translation

AnyPS5 hits 100% GPU Shader Instruction Coverage, bringing PS5 to PC game conversion one step closer

The AnyPS5 project is exciting. It aims to bypass PlayStation 5 (PS5) emulation by converting PS5 executables into native PC formats. This could let PS5 games run natively on Windows and Linux, letting PlayStation-only games play on non-PlayStation hardware.

AnyPS5 has reached 100% GPU Shader Instruction coverage, implementing all of the PS5’s 1166 AMD RDNA 1/2 instructions. While this doesn’t mean the tool can run PS5 games accurately, it now recognises all shaders, and work can continue to improve compatibility.

Using dynamic linking, much like Wine or Proton, PS5 games could eventually run on Linux without emulation. This is similar to how SteamOS allows Windows PC games to run on Linux. Because the PlayStation 5 uses PC-like hardware (an AMD Zen 2 CPU with RDNA 2 <a href="https://comicvibe.com/video-dragons-dogma-2-nintendo-switch-2-vs-ps5-graphics-comparison/” title=”Video: Dragon's Dogma 2 Nintendo Switch 2 vs. PS5 graphics comparison”>graphics), translating PS5 software for PC compatibility could be an easier, faster way to get PS5 games running on PC than emulation. AnyPS5 aims to recompile PS5 shaders to run as SPIR-V code for Vulkan.

Progress has been fast, but a lot of work is still required

While 100% of GPU Shader Instructions are now recognised, the PS5’s system libraries are only 84.69% complete. 2,578 of 3,044 known functions are translated. This list of functions also has the potential to grow over time, as developers can add new functions to the PlayStation 5.

At its current rate of progress, it may not take long for AnyPS5 to support 100% of the PlayStation 5’s known system libraries. Once this happens, the project’s focus may shift. Enabling correct graphics behaviours and increasing compatibility should allow real PS5 games to run on non-PlayStation hardware. In fact, Dreaming Sarah, a 2D platformer, has already been shown running on PC through AnyPS5. While this is a simpler game than most, the fact that it runs at a stable 60 FPS is a major achievement.
