Anime fans, cosplayers and families filled downtown Victoria for the Otaku Downtown Glow Fest, a nighttime market celebrating anime, K-pop and fandom culture.

The family-friendly event featured local vendors, games, contests, K-pop photocard trading and music, creating a vibrant night market atmosphere. Cosplay was encouraged, with attendees arriving dressed as characters from anime, manga, video games and other pop culture franchises.

For many guests, the event offered a rare opportunity to connect with others who share their interests.

A.J. Soto and Evan Soto traveled from Edna to attend the festival, saying anime-centered events are uncommon in the Crossroads.

A.J. Soto, who previously lived in Victoria, said opportunities for local anime fans to gather have become increasingly limited.

“It kind of feels nice for anyone who’s into anime that we have something to come to,” he said.

He added that the event highlighted a fandom that often goes unnoticed.

“It lets you know that there’s plenty of fans in the area,” A.J. Soto said. “We just finally have something to show ourselves at.”

Evan Soto said the turnout challenged his perception of the local anime community.

“Coming around here, there’s all kinds of people,” he said. “People I didn’t expect to be into that kind of stuff.”

The festival also gave attendees a chance to express themselves through cosplay and alternative fashion.

Alyssa Del Bosque attended in a casual costume inspired by Umbreon, a Pokémon character. She said events like Glow Fest create a welcoming environment where people can feel comfortable expressing themselves.

“It’s cool to see a bunch of teenagers out and dressing up and feeling comfortable being out on the streets in costumes or in gothic attire,” Del Bosque said. “It’s different, and I like it. It’s fun.”

Stormy Phillips attended dressed as Sailor Moon and said smaller events offer a more personal experience than large conventions.

“You can never get the homey feeling if you go to a bigger city,” Phillips said. “It’s not as comfortable.”

She said community events also provide a space where people with shared interests can connect without fear of being judged.

“It’s really nice, especially in a smaller community, because people can be themselves,” she said.

Many attendees said they hope similar events continue to be held in Victoria.

For anime, K-pop and cosplay enthusiasts across the Crossroads, Glow Fest served as both a celebration of fandom and a reminder that the local community continues to grow.
