Angela Robinson is stepping into ancient Egypt.
Disney+ and 20th Television are developing a live-action series adaptation of Rick Riordan’s The Kane Chronicles trilogy, with Riordan and Robinson teaming up to create and executive produce the project. Robinson, known for her work on True Blood, How to Get Away With Murder and The L Word, also directed two episodes of Netflix’s Wednesday and wrote and directed the 2017 film Professor Marston and the Wonder Women.
Should it go to series, The Kane Chronicles would join Percy Jackson and the Olympians, also based on Riordan’s books, in Disney+’s growing mythological universe.
Based on Riordan’s three book trilogy, The Red Pyramid, The Throne of Fire and The Serpent’s Shadow, the series follows siblings Carter and Sadie Kane, descendants of the Egyptian pharaohs Narmer and Ramses the Great, as they discover the magic of ancient Egypt is very much alive in the modern world. The story is set in the same universe as Riordan’s Camp Half-Blood Chronicles and Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard.
The official logline reads: “When their father unleashes the god of chaos and vanishes, the estranged Kane siblings must master their inherited Egyptian magic, forge unlikely alliances, and rescue their father before warring gods can wreak havoc on our modern world.”
The project gives new life to The Kane Chronicles after the property spent several years in development as a feature film at Netflix. Riordan announced in 2020 that Netflix was developing the trilogy as a series of movies, but the project stalled and ultimately went into turnaround. Riordan confirmed in early 2024 that the rights had reverted to him after Netflix’s option lapsed, and he and his wife, Rebecca Riordan, began exploring other options for the franchise. 20th Television subsequently acquired the rights to develop the property as a series for Disney+ instead.
The move mirrors the path Percy Jackson and the Olympians took to reach Disney+ after Riordan’s earlier, more difficult experience with the 2010 theatrical adaptation, which he has said was taken out of his hands creatively. Percy Jackson premiered on Disney+ in December 2023 to a strong debut, and its third season, adapting The Titan’s Curse for the first time, is set to arrive in November.
Robinson and Riordan are executive producing The Kane Chronicles alongside Rebecca Riordan and Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Jeremy Bell of The Gotham Group, the same producers behind Percy Jackson. No casting, episode count or premiere date has been announced, and the project remains in early development.
