A classic series that has been included in rankings of the best TV shows of all time is coming to Netflix soon: Second City Television. Featuring one of the most star-studded casts in television history, SCTV launched the careers of several stars who went on to become immensely beloved.
All Seasons of ‘SCTV’ Are Coming to Netflix on September 1, 2026
On August 14, 2026, What’s on Netflix reported that Second City Television will be coming to Netflix in several countries on September 1, 2026. While the full list of regions is still unknown, the outlet confirmed that the United States and the United Kingdom are included. Also known as SCTV, all six seasons of the iconic comedy show, which consists of 135 episodes, will be available to stream on the service.
Unfortunately for Netflix users in Canada, SCTV will not be coming to Netflix in that country, which is where the show was originally produced. Instead, the series, which originally aired between September 21, 1976, and July 17, 1984, is available to stream on Prime Video in Canada.
Who Named ‘SCTV’ One of the ‘Greatest TV Shows of All Time’?
In September 2022, Rolling Stone published its ranking of the “100 Greatest TV Shows of All Time,” which included SCTV at No. 70. Before that, in September 2014, Time included Second City Television on its list of the “All-Time 100 TV Shows,” which listed the best series in alphabetical order. Additionally, it has been included in several rankings of the best sketch comedy shows, including one published byYardbarker.
The most obvious reason SCTV has been celebrated in so many lists is that it features one of the most comedically brilliant and beloved casts in television history. The series starred John Candy, Martin Short, Rick Moranis, Catherine O’Hara, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Joe Flaherty, Harold Ramis, and Dave Thomas. The series also featured several memorable characters, including Bob & Doug McKenzie, Johnny LaRue, Lola Heatherton, Count Floyd, Edith Prickley, Guy Caballero, and Sammy Maudlin.
SCTV focused on a fictional television station, featuring a mix of behind-the-scenes drama and fake on-screen offerings. The concept created the perfect premise to introduce a mix of sketches and recurring storylines that lampooned the entertainment industry and pop culture.
Beyond having a brilliant concept, the show was produced by comedy icons who were incredibly close friends, which resulted in a cast with unrivaled comedic chemistry. That is why many of the series’ stars spent the decades after the show ended finding new projects to work on together. The most obvious example of that is Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy co-starring in Schitt’s Creek and several Christopher Guest mockumentaries.
