Gaming laptops have always involved some compromise between performance and portability, but the <a href="https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/laptop-computers/spd/alienware16area51aa16250″ rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>Alienware 16 Area-51 Gaming Laptop doesn’t seem particularly interested in pretending otherwise. This flagship gaming system is designed to pack serious performance into something you can pick up and take with you, even if your shoulders might have something to say about it afterwards.

Our review unit pairs an Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus processor with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 Laptop GPU featuring 16GB of GDDR7 memory, backed by 32GB of DDR5 and a 1TB PCIe Gen4 SSD.

Finished in Liquid Teal with an anodised aluminium lid, it moves away from the usual black gaming laptop without becoming overly flashy. Alienware’s Zero Hinge keeps the rear edge surprisingly clean, while the softer contours and pillowed palm rests make the system considerably more comfortable than its substantial dimensions might suggest.

At up to 3.4kg, with another kilogram coming from the 360W power adapter, this isn’t something I’d want to carry around every day. It makes more sense as a desktop replacement that can occasionally travel.

The 16-inch OLED display runs at 2560×1600 with a 240Hz refresh rate and 0.2ms response time, combining the deep blacks and contrast you’d expect from OLED with enough speed for competitive gaming. NVIDIA G-SYNC, Advanced Optimus and Dolby Vision are also supported, with HDR brightness reaching up to 620 nits.

Alienware’s CherryMX ultra low-profile mechanical laptop keyboard came as a bit of a surprise. With 1.8mm of key travel, it feels much closer to a traditional desktop mechanical keyboard than a laptop, with each press feeling noticeably more substantial than the membrane keyboards we normally encounter.

Per-key AlienFX lighting and N-key rollover round things out nicely, and it’s one of the few laptop keyboards where I didn’t immediately feel the need to plug something else in.

For performance testing, we turned to the Black Myth: Wukong benchmark.

Running at the native 2560×1600 resolution using the Cinematic preset, DLSS, Frame Generation and a Super Resolution setting of 68, the Alienware 16 Area-51 averaged 100FPS with Full Ray Tracing disabled, reaching a maximum of 119FPS, a minimum of 87FPS, and a low fifth of 90FPS. I even ran the same settings on battery power alone, and the system still managed a very respectable 60FPS.

Turning Full Ray Tracing up to Very High naturally took its toll, but the system still averaged 77FPS, with a maximum of 100FPS, a minimum of 51FPS and a low fifth of 67FPS. Maintaining comfortably above 60FPS on average while running Cinematic settings and heavy ray tracing is an impressive result from a laptop.

Frame Generation was enabled for both tests, so these figures shouldn’t be confused with native rendering performance, but they do reflect how most people are likely to use the hardware when chasing this level of visual quality.

Keeping everything under control is Alienware’s Cryo-Tech cooling system. Our RTX 5080 configuration includes Element 31 thermal interface material, a larger vapor chamber and increased copper throughout the thermal module, while the Cryo-Chamber underneath helps move more air through the chassis.

The 96Wh battery is paired with Alienware Battery Defender, while Command Center offers Quiet, Balanced, Performance, Overdrive and Battery profiles.

Connectivity is mostly positioned around the rear, keeping cables away from your hands while gaming. Our RTX 5080 configuration includes two Thunderbolt 5 ports, three USB-A 5Gbps connections and HDMI 2.1, while the left side houses a full-sized SD card reader and headset jack.

Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 handle wireless connectivity, and while there isn’t a built-in Ethernet port on the 16-inch model, Alienware includes a USB-C to RJ45 adapter for anyone wanting a wired connection.

The Alienware 16 Area-51 Gaming Laptop isn’t trying to compete with thin, light laptops, and that’s probably for the best. It’s big, heavy and comes with an equally substantial power adapter, but that extra bulk is being put to good use.

Between the excellent 240Hz OLED display, surprisingly desktop-like keyboard, RTX 5080 performance and a cooling system designed to let that hardware stretch its legs, it feels every bit like the flagship machine it’s intended to be.
