It seems almost hard to believe, but it has been nearly three decades since Marvel Comics’ first successful superhero movie hit theaters. After a few missteps with titles like Howard the Duck, The Punisher, Captain America, and The Fantastic Four, the first Marvel hero that hit it big in movies was a horror character. It was 28 years ago that New Line Cinema released the Marvel Comics movie Blade, and while most fans who didn’t read comics had no idea it was based on a superhero, the film opened the door for studios to take more chances on Marvel movies in the next few years, as the X-Men and Spider-Man arrived next.

Blade hit theaters on August 21, 1998, and the movie contained one of the funniest lines that ever appeared in a superhero release.

Blade Has One of Superhero Movies’ Most Ludicrous Lines

In Blade, Wesley Snipes played Eric Brooks, a daywalker who hunts vampires. Known as Blade, Eric is a Dhampir, and he is part-vampire thanks to his mother being attacked and killed by a vampire while pregnant, meaning Blade was born with many of the supernatural abilities of a vampire, but with the ability to walk in the daylight and without the need to feed on humans to survive, instead surviving on a special substitute. While the movie opened with his mother being attacked, the movie moves to the present day, where Blade has been hunting vampires for years.

The ending of Blade saw the daywalker slaughtering all the vampires on his way to finding Deacon Frost (Stephen Dorff), an upstart vampire who wants to conquer the human race. Frost had brought Blade’s mother back as a vampire, and in this climactic scene, Blade kills all of Frost’s demons, including Blade’s own mother, before he finally confronts Frost outside on a ledge. Frost has been too overpowered for Blade to defeat, and he realizes there is only one chance to bring down the vampire. Blade has EDTA, an anticoagulant that explodes when combined with vampire blood.

This leads to one of the most ridiculous yet hilarious moments in the entire movie. Frost and Blade face off from a distance, and just when it looks like Frost has the advantage, Blade drops a line that fans were repeating ad nauseam after the movie’s release, even though it made little sense in the context of the film’s story. Blade looked at Frost and said, “Some motherf***ers are always trying to ice skate uphill.” Blade then throws the needle of EDTA into the air and then spin kicks it so it flies into Frost’s forehead. This then causes Frost to expand into a grotesque blob and explode.

This line has a simple meaning. Blade is saying that there are people who always try to do things the hardest way possible. He is talking about Frost wanting to take over the world, but he is doing things in the most difficult way possible rather than just getting the job done. It is an insult to Frost. However, Blade then does something ridiculous when he throws the only weapon he has into the air and tests a spin kick to send it into Frost’s forehead. Blade could have charged in and stabbed it into Frost’s forehead, but Blade had to do things the hard way, just to deliver a cool movie shot. It should also be noted that the ice skate comment has a nice wink to Blade’s name as well. Even if it was ridiculous, it was a funny line and proves why Snipes is perfect playing Blade.

Wesley Snipes Remains the Man Most Associated with Blade

Wesley Snipes most recently appeared as Blade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie Deadpool & Wolverine. This was one of the biggest callbacks in the movie. Jennifer Garner’s Elektra was a flop at the box office in her own movie, but she at least redeemed herself here. Channing Tatum as Gambit was a fun callback to people who pay attention to the behind-the-scenes drama, and he delivered a great performance. However, the movie proved that everyone still loves Snipes as Blade, and he even delivered a perfect one-liner in this movie as well.

In Deadpool & Wolverine, they were discussing the variants in all the different Earths, and Blade said, “There’s only been one Blade. There’s only ever gonna be one Blade.” This was a tough line since people have been waiting for Mahershala Ali to show up as Blade in the MCU for years, and that won’t happen now. However, it was a brilliantly funny line, and it shows that Snipes might understand this character better than anyone else, at least in the movies.
