One of comedy’s most iconic duos is heading back to comic books.
On Oct. 1, independent publisher Monstrous announced a new Kickstarter campaign for a comic book series entitled Abbott and Costello Meet the Monsters. PEOPLE has an exclusive first look.Featuring the iconic Hollywood pairing of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, the comic books reunite the duo with monsters and supernatural beings, not unlike those in their beloved films. The new comic book series was inspired by the pair’s many horror comedies, like 1948’s Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. In other films, they interacted with classic Universal monsters like the Invisible Man and the Mummy.

The campaign features three full-length comic books, authored by acclaimed writer James Aquilone.
The first issue, Abbott and Costello Meet the Night Stalker, centers on the world of the TV series Kolchak: The Night Stalker. The comic features interior art by Dave Acosta and covers by Zac Atkinson, Lukas Ketner and J.K. Woodward. The second comic, Abbott and Costello Meet the Morlocks, features the cave-dwellers from H.G. Wells’ novel The Time Machine, along with covers by Russ Braun and Colton Worley. The last issue, Abbott and Costello Meet Cthulhu, about H.P. Lovecraft’s fictional entity, has interior art by Juan Samu and covers by E.V. Cantada and Robert Hack.

Abbott and Costello Meet the Monsters is the first string of new comics starring Abbott and Costello in over 50 years.
“Abbott and Costello were my introduction to horror as well as comedy,” Aquilone says in a statement shared with PEOPLE. “They’ve been a huge influence on my work and it’s unreal to be bringing my heroes back to comics in a genre that is near and dear to me — horror-comedy, which might not exist without Abbott and Costello.”
