PS5 Pro out of stock as GTA 6 catapults console demand

TL;DR: PS5 Pro stock has sold out at multiple U.S. retailers, driving resale prices higher as demand surges around GTA 6. Despite Rockstar confirming GTA 6 will target 30FPS on PS5, hype-promotions showing PS5 footage, social posts claiming 60FPS on PS5 Pro, and buyers seeking future-proofing-boosted sales.

GTA 6 is expected to run at 30FPS, even on the PlayStation 5 Pro, but that hasn’t stopped demand for the $900 console to surge to new heights.

Sony’s PlayStation 5 Pro console has gone out of stock at multiple retailers in the United States, including Walmart, Target, and Best Buy, as well as Sony’s own direct-to-consumer PlayStation Direct store.

It’s believed that Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 6 is the main reason for the major sales spike. The recent GTA 6 extended look trailer on Netflix clearly promoted Sony’s PlayStation 5, confirming that everything was captured on a base PS5 console. Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6 will still run at 30FPS on PS5, matching up with reports from many months ago that cited CPU limitations as the main reason for the frame rate target.

The sales spike could also be caused by recent posts from HipHopGamer, who outright claims that GTA 6 will hit 60FPS on the more-powerful PlayStation: “Get a PS5 Pro now,” he said in the Tweet, which has been seen by over 144,000 people.

Rockstar Games has yet to really discuss these high-level technical details, and these topics can be sensitive, because as we can see, GTA 6 is big enough to sway all purchase habits–hardware, software, and probably even subscriptions. Even still, gamers are buying up PS5 Pro consoles in an attempt to future-proof against price hikes and to secure the best-performing system possible should any post-release performance patches come out from Rockstar.

How did the Netflix extended look trailer influence PS5 demand according to the article?

The stock shortages could also be attributed, in part, to the simple logistics of smaller supply on the retailer side–at least for this window of time. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are paying big money to produce consoles right now, and the shipment schedules will ebb and flow based around seasonality and other trends.
