Prince Jackson is celebrating what would have been his father Michael Jackson’s 68th birthday, bringing the King of Pop’s name back into the spotlight once again. More than 17 years after his death, Jackson’s legacy continues to generate headlines, music sales, performances and now a billion-dollar biopic. His 68th birthday carries a different kind of weight, especially when the celebration comes from the children who knew the superstar beyond the sequins, moonwalk and global mythology.

There are certain birthdays that feel like dates on a calendar, and then there are birthdays that become cultural timestamps. For Michael Jackson, August 29 has long belonged to fans, but his children have given the occasion a deeply personal dimension.

Prince Jackson celebrates his father’s 68th birthday in Las Vegas

On Aug. 29, Prince Jackson, 29, appeared at Michael Jackson ONE, Cirque du Soleil’s long-running Las Vegas production built around his father’s music and visual language. The setting could hardly have been more fitting. Inside Mandalay Bay, Jackson’s songs continue to live through choreography, spectacle and the unmistakable rhythms that once turned music television into appointment viewing. PEOPLE first reported Prince’s appearance exclusively, documenting his participation in the annual birthday celebration.

The timing also connects the family celebration to an extraordinary new chapter in Michael Jackson’s posthumous legacy, as The 2026 biopic Michael, starring Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson, has crossed the billion-dollar mark globally. Prince served as a producer on the film and previously described seeing Jaafar transformed into his father as an emotional experience

That generational handoff is particularly striking because Prince was only 12 when his father died in 2009. His sister Paris and younger brother Bigi have also continued to carry different pieces of the Jackson story into the present.

And beneath the spectacle, there remains the reason these celebrations keep returning to the same place: the music.

Michael Jackson’s music still owns the room

Michael Jackson did not simply make hit records. He helped rewrite the grammar of pop stardom. ‘Off the Wall’ fused funk, disco and soul into a blueprint for the modern crossover album, while Thriller turned songs such as ‘Billie Jean,’ ‘Beat It’ and ‘Thriller’ into cultural landmarks. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame recognizes Thriller as the best-selling album ever and credits Jackson with reshaping pop through his sound, choreography and groundbreaking long-form music videos.

Then came ‘Bad’, ‘Dangerous’ and a catalog that kept expanding the boundaries of what a pop star could control. ‘Smooth Criminal,’ ‘Black or White,’ ‘Man in the Mirror,’ ‘Earth Song’ and ‘You Are Not Alone’ each became part of a musical vocabulary that remains instantly recognizable. Jackson died on June 25, 2009, but the songs never stopped moving. They found new listeners, new stages and eventually a new generation of performers willing to chase the precision of that moonwalk.

That is the strange power of Michael Jackson’s legacy. The man is gone, but the choreography still starts, the opening beats still land, and <a href="https://www.netflixjunkie.com/hollywood-news-michael-biopic-sets-streaming-release-date-after-record-breaking-global-success/” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>the audience still knows exactly when to scream. As Prince marks his father’s 68th birthday, the celebration therefore becomes more than a remembrance.
