Yes, science-fiction stories live long and prosper on streaming services, and when it comes time for fans to pay those subscription fees, well… resistance is futile.
No matter whether you like interstellar journeys, empire-vs-rebellion battles, space operas with sleeper agents, spice wars with sandworms, or investigations into the X-traordinary, the streaming services have something for you. Here are the streamers we’d recommend for seven kinds of sci-fi fans.
Best for Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica fans: Paramount
Whether you take command from Picard or Adama, trust the instincts of Spock or Starbuck, or prefer Seven of Nine or Number Six as a cyborg companion, Paramount+ has content for you.
It’s got Star Trek series from seven decades andStar Trek films from two timelines. And on the Battlestar Galactica side of things, Paramount+ has the 2003 miniseries, the 2004-09 series, and the 2009 TV movie The Plan.
Best for Star Wars fans: Disney+
If you Obi-want as much Star Wars entertainment as possible, Disney+ is your only hope.
It has all nine movies of the Skywalker Saga, live-action series like Andor and Ahsoka, animated series like The Clone Wars and Maul – Shadow Lord, plus documentaries and shorts, and you can cue it up in less than 12 parsecs.
Best for Dune fans: HBO Max
Ready to spice up your life? 2021’s Dune and 2024’s Dune: Part Two are both on HBO Max, and before long, Dune: Part Three will be, too… unless corporate consolidation says otherwise.
HBO Max is also the streaming home of the spinoff series Dune: Prophecy and its accompanying podcast.
Best for X-philes: Hulu
The truth is out there, and so is The X-Files, as all 11 seasons of the seminal ’90s sci-fi series are streaming on Hulu.
Best Streaming Services for Horrors: HBO Max, Paramount+, and More
Plus, Hulu hosts both versions of the continuation film The X-Files: I Want to Believe: the PG-13 original from 2008 and the just-released R-rated director’s cut, subtitled I Want to Believe Vrach Frankenshteyn. (The 1998 film, The X-Files, sadly, isn’t streaming anywhere currently.)
Best for prestige sci-fi: Apple TV
You can’t have any conversation about sci-fi TV these days without discussing the Emmy-adored Severance and Pluribus, both of which are Apple TV productions.
Apple’s streaming service also hosts other high-profile sci-fi series, including See, For All Mankind, Amazing Stories, Foundation, Invasion, Hello Tomorrow!, Silo, Dark Matter, Murderbot, Star City, and the upcoming Neuromancer.
Best for cerebral stories: Prime Video
If you’re not prone to spacing out during your sci-fi viewing, you’ll find many out-of-this-world stories on Prime Video.
Think original TV series like The Expanse, Night Sky, Outer Range, The Peripheral, Solos, Tales From the Loop, Undone, and the upcoming Blade Runner 2099, as well as a library of films like Interstellar, The Martian, Moon, and the recent Project Hail Mary.
Best for blockbuster-level shows: Netflix
We have no chill regarding Netflix’s lavishly-produced sci-fi original series, including Stranger Things, Black Mirror, and 3 Body Problem, of course, but also Sense8, the newer Lost in Space, and the newer Cowboy Bebop.
And don’t hypersleep on the streamer’s original sci-fi movies, including The Cloverfield Paradox, The Midnight Sky, The Adam Project, They Cloned Tyrone, Spaceman, and the upcoming Ray Gunn.
