Our thanks to comic creator Kate “Widdershins” Ashwin for pointing us in the direction of hugely talented comic creator Sarah Jolley, best known for her webcomic The Property of Hate, but who recently started an amazing Doctor Who fan strip, “Into the Inkwell”, inspired by events in the innovative episode Lux.

“Into the Inkwell” picks up the story of Lux after events in the TV episode, the story’s chaotic central character reunited, indirectly, with the Doctor, who needs help. It’s a beautifully drawn, wondrously told strip, well worth your attention. Read it from the start here.

Sarah Jolley, also known as Modmad, is a Cheshire-based cartoonist and storyboard artist whose official website reveals a formidable enthusiasm for creating comics, that’s flowed over onto Tumblr for a while now, which you can support on Patreon – and many do.

The Property of Hateis her best known strip, up and running for some years now and translated into several different languages, in which a child is given a choice to leave their home in favour of a fantastical journey that will forever change them, if it doesn’t, potentially, kill her. It’s received deserved plaudits from around the world, Marie Anello at The Absolute calling it “strange, thoughtful, and visually arresting… a surprising gem of a webcomic”.

“I can think of only a few webcomics that manage to combine good writing, good story and good art, but The Property of Hate displays all three from the get-go,” says Roisin Waters.

Sarah started using Patreon due to health reasons.

“I have been told that I cannot both draw for a professional living and do my own work outside of it,” Sarah explains. “I would very probably shrivel up and die without being able to draw and write my own work, and consequntly the logical step is to endeavour to make my own work my professional living!

“There is also a rather real possibility that I will not be able to draw for the rest of my life, as the joints in my fingers are affected by the condition and will likely get worse as I age, so the sooner I can focus all my energy on completing my stories the more likely I will be able to before it gets to that point. I’ve been very lucky with the people who have helped and supported me thus far, and I can’t imagine how I could have done as much as I have without my family and friends.

“This is the next chapter, and while it is a frighteningly big step it would be churlish to put aside what they have already given me without at least trying to make a go of it.”

The Live Oak home of husband-and-wife artists Zane Thomas and Connie Chapa is like a pop culture menagerie of colorful, retro wonders. Halloween masks of the Ben Cooper variety line the hallway walls. Snap, Crackle, Pop and other mid-century mascot figures pack a glass cabinet. Movie posters reminiscent of an Alamo Drafthouse lobby share the walls with pop art prints…
